Remote play together should unlock achievements for both players!
When I play a coop game with my friend, I can invite achievements. But the achievements do not unlock for my friend even though it counts the hours on game.

If we both finish playing a game on my account, i unlock all the achievements and my friend ends up with playtime on record and 0 achievements. The achievements should unlock for him as well.

What are your thoughts? Should this feature be added?

Sure why not, but I think it isn't implemented because the game client isn't running on his machine.

Exactly. But achievements unlock via Steam's client APIs meaning if the Remote Play tracks your time just as if you were running a game, it could receive achievement unlocks from the remote host and the friend connected to you would unlock the achievements just as you do.

Up to the game developer to integrate that, Valve merely provides the interface.

Lmao, no, it is not up to the dev to provide that. How would my friend's PC know that I have unlocked an achievement? Valve needs to implement a messaging system, where a message gets sent by the host to the guest and the guess calling the api to unlock achievement.

There is literally no way for devs to implement this other than spamming web API for achievements. Which would be a horrible way to do it.

Isn't the remote player just using a video link?

Yes and No.

Steam Remote Play is built on the Steam's friends interface, it invites your friend via a session id, game id, etc. so that the friend you invite knows what games you invite them to play, and so on. This communication protocol could easily make it so that when I get an achievement, a message gets sent to my friend who is connected via remote play and his client would unlock the achievement like any game would with steam's api. Same principle as how Steam Achievement manager works, with the difference that steam itself can pass the achievement ID automatically and unlocking it every time the host unlocks it.

It also sends events in case you alt tab, meaning it does support sending other commands other than input devices and the output - being the video stream.

Your friend does NOT own the game, you are streaming it to them and why they do not get achievements. Think of achievements as ownership of the game.

If you family share the game to them they will get achievements.

Exactly. I can family share the game to them. Why would we have to play the game all over again on his account for both of us to unlock the achievements? Even if your friend owns the game and you play via remote play only one of you unlocks achievements.

Because they DO NOT own it, they DID NOT buy it and why achievements do not trigger.

There is no other answer.

You asked in the OP post "should this feature be added?" Answer - no.

This has been a request since RPT was added. We'll see if Valve decides on non-owners that are being streamed the game will ever be allowed to get achievements in the future.

Can you give a rational explanation why achievements do work for family sharing, but not Remote Play Together? Cause in both cases, a person doesn't own the game.

The only thing different here is which account is actually running the exe.

Yet playtime for the visitor (so to speak) gets counted. So running the .exe doesn't actually matter for that.

It's the way achievements are handled. Playtime only requires one to be in game. It's just another thing to add to the long list of what Valve needs to do with achievements in the future.

Because family sharing is set up to allow achievements, remote play is not.

I was responding to tbe OP with regard to remote play who dis not mention family sharing.
