Steam library is UGLY. many games still have the old horizontal covers
it must have been at least a year since the update to the steam client that changed the way games look in the library and many of my games, I would say the majority, still have the old horizontal cover images, and it looks so cheap. Any other game service would have taken ownership of the games on their platform and at least make sure they all have properly formatted box art but not Valve... also the new sidebar is confusing and sucks. for example if I apply a filter, or search for a game in the sidebar, those filters won't also be applied to the grid view... I just hate it. even Origin and Uplay are better looking now, and GOG galaxy blows steam out of the water, just in terms of presentation, especially how games are presented and sorted. (also GOG has 3rd party client integration which I know steam will never have... but they should.)

You can create your own custome covers for any game in your library. The power is in your hands,

I wish I could understand what you meant exactly. Old horizontal covers? You mean the background, where the game title logo is?

The publishers of the games are responsible for uploading artwork for their covers and such.
Steam informed them nearly a year in advance and gave them preview builds to make those.
Many just did not bother to do so.

Also you can use: https://www.steamgriddb.com/
Which collects fan made covers, banners and icons for thousands of games on Steam.
Even animated covers are possible in the new library.
I assigned custom covers for hundreds of games in my library, takes maybe an afternoon depending how many games you have.

Way better then looking at those old format covers.

He means this:
http://prntscr.com/v90z59

Left is a game with updated cover artwork that fits for the new library format, right is a game that still uses the old horizontal format, which looks not good in the new UI.

I don't want to have to spend an entire afternoon updating metadata in the steam client, I shouldn't have to lol. I have so many games It would take forever.... easier to just link my steam account with GOG galaxy or playnite and use that (which is what I do). but it still leaves my steam library looking like garbage. I just wish I could go back to the old look with the horizontal images. more games fit on screen that way anyway.

That's true. That needs more work. I suppose we have to contact the developer about that. I've been creating custom artworks for those things myself, and putting them in the artwork section, but aside from that, I am not sure what can be done, unless the developers do it themselves. Those artworks weren't DMCA'd or anything, so I suppose most developers are okay with it, if you do it yourself.

The only solution right now is that you do it on your own, as the first comment suggested.

I recently used steamgriddb to update all my art that hasn't been updated by the dev, it was kind of relaxing and didn't take nearly as long as I imagined it would. I was also amazed that it had art for every game I needed. An option to use horizontal tiles wouldn't be a bad thing, but I doubt it will happen officially, I have seen someone manage to make a skin that uses the horizontal tiles though.

edit:
I've also seen a script that automatically updates all the old art using the steamgriddb database, but I don't remember where I saw it unfortunately. I did it manually because I wanted to choose each cover myself.

i have alot of games in my library that are still using old artwork like it shows a screenshot of the games store page. some just show a black square with nothing in it. no big deal but i dont expect all devs to fix this even ones who left steam to go to other platforms.

Yeah I usually make or search for a good horizontal cover art to put there myself. At least that ain't as bad as KF2 Logo, is literally a tiny banner, lmao

Then you wait for the publishers to get around to updating their boxart.

Sooo what's the complaint m8? Problem solved.

Unfortunately you're in the minority so, get used to it. On the other hand. You can hope that they tweak the library interface somewhat but at this poiint its less likely.

there's a huge thread somewhere about people who want the old format back... the number of people is a lot bigger than you think..i personally dislike the new UI as well and should of been an option to keep the old layout, there is absolutely no excuse not to. instead, everyone is spoon fed the same crap they think we need/want.
StillFrozen Oct 29, 2020 @ 2:14am
This sounds like a completely irrelevant problem
AustrAlien2010 Oct 29, 2020 @ 2:23am
No more relevant then a texture that is missing in a game. Why should we even bother with textures. Right? If it is all the same to you.
(I am kidding of course. It is half-arsed. That is what it is. But I did not wanted to be judgemental, because that is not constructive either, and contacting the developer probably will not work either, because chances are, they will just ignore or simply aren´t there to respond. So I just do it myself, if you do not mind.)

A few thousand vs a few millions that are just fine with it.
You're talking a group that's observed to be a small fraction of a percent of the population.
Its a minority.

Plenty of reasons. But we know you'd never consider them to be good reasons.

As saiid you'dve already figured out a work around that is acceptable and works for ye. So then... problem solved. You do you and the masses get to enjoy the new library. EVerybody wins.

OP, you might want to empty the download cache. I did so recently, because the Sega 60th anniversary covers weren't showing for me. After that, I also noticed a bunch of games that didn't have covers before, suddenly got covers.

Also, Valve can't take ownership of games they did not create nor publish. It's up the the actual developers/publishers. In the mean time, you can use custom covers, which often are nicer anyway.
