Dont ever use the word "latinx" ever again
You most likely have good intentions, but that word really angers a lot of people in latin america

Just use "latin" or "latino/a"

Ok thanks bye

I personally don't really like it, it's ugly and doesn't really feel or sound right in Spanish. I prefer 'latine' which has also seen some use throughout modern history and is actually pronounceable because it was originally said IRL instead of typed. I used 'latinx' once in conversation to give it a whirl and it caused an awkward pause. Felt bad on my tongue, mang. I mean, gah, an X.

But at the end of the day, I'm not a Spanish speaker, so it's not up to me, it's up to them. The Spanish speaking hive mind.

But also, there's nothing wrong with using inclusive language so long as original meanings are preserved and you aren't digging up an entire linguistic continuum to do it (prescriptivism is a hornet's nest as far as ethics go, and if you have a language with grammatical gender you might as well give up because the game is rigged against you from the start - this is why most people are only interested in the reformation or inclusion of personal/identity related words).

Anyway, as it costs nothing to use someone's preferred nomenclature, I will point out that the Latinx Game Festival is so named by the Latinx people who have organized it, so if you have an issue with the name they've chosen to use for themselves, pull up your big boy pants and stop having issues. Er. I mean, enter a dialogue with them. Yes that's the phrase I was looking for.

Yours in not just good faith, but GREAT faith,
Dr. Horse, BA(Hons), MEng, PhD.

Obviously the Latino/Latina Game Event, just for that super long name
And for those who identify as neither the masculine or the feminine?
Such people exist.

I was joking. I think this whole situation is stupid.

I think it's just a dumb shorthand of saying latina/latino, right? Instead of writing both out they just put an x in an attempt to include both?

People seem to be offended but I don't really understand why because I'm not latin american.

I don't think it's on par with the N-word though. Maybe the term LatinX is ignorant but I don't think it's intentionally racist. Plus it's a recent thing that doesn't have as much historical weight... But I guess it's not my place to say either way.

I find it extremely funny, the Latino community hates the LatinX term, almost nobody uses it yet you have decided to call them that way. It was created by deranged SJWs and now authoritatively used.

Please explain to me what's the logic behind it, because afaik the logic behind "What is your pronoun" agenda is to be able to choose your pronoun and being called by one you wish.

It is not the case here.

Ooh, the sweet hypocrisy. Rules For Thee Not For Me.
And yet the people organizing the event, participating in the event, and who designed the pictures for the event are indeed part of the same community.... You'd think they'd have noticed they were using a term they found offensive hmm?

why not just use "latin" absolutely nobody should be offended by that term unlike "latinx"

Latin would be rather broad. It'd cover everything south of texas and Anywhere, borderuing/bordered by the mediterranean. Italy, Francy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, etc...yeah. Latin is a heck of a broad ethnic/cultural swath when you actually consider it.

Did he fail at actually understanding that iot wasn't Valve/Steam that came up with the name but rather the organizers and participants, who seklf-deescribe as such?

Gender neutral makes sense sometimes, like if you want to promote something to both men and women maybe gender neutral terminology is appropriate. But then it really should not be considered offensive by the people you are promoting to, which "latinx" is according to the wikipedia article. Think some people go overboard with being gender neutral (saying that as someone who don't mind gender neutral words since there are absolutely contexts where they make sense). But I don't really care that much. It's just seems like a silly thing to get a strong emotional reaction to, to me at least.

That'd make it more inclusive, then.

thats actually great, i always found interesting my language can be traced all the way back to rome and variants of latin have spread from romania to mexico

but fine if you want to be "less broad" just use latin american, like literally every single latin american in existence

the thing is the word latinx really feels like a slur, because its a label placed upon us by people outside the community

now that i think about it, a latin event with games from brazil, france, romania, spain, italy, hispano-america, etc would be great, you could doodle up some roman soldiers playing games and such, id be up for that

Technically yes. But that sorty of works against the intent of the event. Ie to draw attention to and promote developers from and games by developers from a specific geographical region.

I mean otherwise every event should just be called Generic game Event.

Can’t they just say “Latin American” since they’re speaking in English instead of Spanish because Latino and Latina are words in Spanish? That would be like me calling a Chinese person in the U.S. a “Zhongguoren” or appending an X to the end of it, “ZhongguorenX”, if Mandarin were a “gendered” language because there are other gendered languages like French and Italian, and it has nothing to do with being “Latin” because German and Russian are also gendered languages.

I don’t even believe in the concept of a “Latin America” or “Latino” to begin with because those are concepts invented by the French, "Africa begins in the Pyrenees” - Napoleon, who are responsible for the 2nd largest slave population in the Americas in Haiti right after the Portuguese in Brazil. The U.S. has the Monroe Doctrine and Mexico has Cinco de Mayo and the Cry of Dolores.

My surname is Basque which isn’t even related to Latin. My first name has a Germanic root. I know Spanish, not French, and I learned English, not French, lol!

That LatinX painting for the sale is also funny because it reminds me of some people on the right who complain that the BBC put a black person in some movie about Romans. I guess the Mormons were right when it comes to Native Americans, lol!

First used in Puerto Rican academic journals

Well that makes sense because Puerto Rico was incorporated into the U.S. in 1917 so they are some weird hybrid with a chip on their shoulder.

Didn't the people on the left complain about hollywood putting a white person in some movie about Japan?

How about complaining about a straight woman playing a transgender role?

Edit: Sorry, forgot the lol!

I think that first world people should stop trying to colonize other cultures. Spanish is a gendered language and we don't need other people to be offended for us. I assure you no spanish speaker likes the term or has ever used it so it was kinda surprising to see Steam so out of touch with reality, I'm glad the community has made itself clear on social media about this. Stop using Latinx...
