Seeing that it's rather easy, only a couple of clicks, to set your status as it is, not sure something like this would be high priority.

You could make it easier for yourself by creating a new shortcut on the desktop and enter the location as:

steam://friends/status/away

Then apply your own shortcut keys in the properies section of the shortcut itself.

Good answer. Any set of workarounds I could imagine could not be simpler than that.

Especially since I just realized steam doesn't support ALT shortcuts? FFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

When testing, I used Ctrl+Alt+ and it worked. Shift+Alt will work too. The only thing to make sure is that there isn't already built-in Windows shortcuts assigned to the custom one, as they are windows and not steam centric.

not sure exactly what you're referring to, but I'm talking about being about to press a key sequence such as "ALT, F, W" which would open the Friends menu and select "Away", if following proper Windows UI conventions.

Ironically even tho MS butters valve's bread in more ways than one, Valve ignores a bunch of this stuff. Cuz they are winners.

In the example posted above Ctrl+Alt+A works as there is no windows shortcut assigned to those keys. Each status would need it's own shortcut and nonconflicting shortcut key combo.

I understand what you are getting at now, but when I said steam doesn't support alt shortcuts I was talking about a completely different approach.

Combining the concepts found in:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt_key (the section "alt key pressed alone")

and

https://www.lifewire.com/windows-keyboard-shortcut-alt-underline-3976923 (basic alt shortcut use, for anyone not familiar)

...if you just press alt (don't hold it) and then start pressing shortcut keys (the underlined letters), you can navigate the menus and have keyboard access to menu commands that might not have a direct single-chord keyboard shortcut. (For example, Notepad doesn't have a direct shortcut for "Save As" but you can press "ALT, F, A" to get there.)

...which is suitable for being automated by a macro etc., which is probably what the OP would have to wind up doing if steam browser protocol didn't provide this much cleaner option.

On another note it was actually pretty hard to web-search a nice explanation of this. It's become some esoteric thing now that MS cares more about phones and xboxes.
