Error in french translate
Hi, I've seen some points have been added to some french words by your translate service. I'm here to inform you that this is not correct in french to do that. That kind of writing is used by political activists, who try to change the way we write. I feel offended that Steam allow that kind of activism in it's platform and I want it to be removed.

More precisely, I speak about some words in the friend's menu, where you can read, for exemple : "Gérer la liste d'ami.e.s". In correct french it's "Gérer la liste d'amis", without points. Another example : "Ajouter un.e ami.e.s", in correct french it's "Ajouter un ami". In french, the masculine form is also a sort of general form, it include female by default. So any addition is unecessary.

I hope it will be fixed soon, have a good day.

Arthurito 11. juli 2020 kl. 16:41

Could you please set the supposed french translation of steam in real French ??? Adding dot inside words is not french language, it's a just a feminist political movement who's trying to change our native language, most french people can't read this !!!!

Please put this in option or disable it, using this form of writing is a political action...

Non mais c'est du délire là, je ne peux même plus avoir une plate-forme en français et je suis obligé de me coltiner une écriture illisible en même temps que de la propagande sur un site marchand. S'ils veulent une option "écriture intégriste" qu'ils le mettent en option mais qu'on ne me retire pas un menu en français. Tant qu'il n'y aura rien, aucun achat steam pour ma part.

____

No but it’s delirium there, I can’t even have a platform in French anymore and I’m forced to deal with illegible writing at the same time as propaganda on a merchant site. If they want an option "fundamentalist writing" that they put it as an option but that they don’t take away a menu in French. As long as there’s nothing, no steam buy for me.

It's not about feminism, some feminists are against that too. It's about a minority of activists who think they can insult an entire community by forcing their mark on this french community.

I agree with "Ad Victoriam", this is not french language, it is not endorsed, and actually it is strongly discouraged by the french official academy for language. We don't want politics in steam. The translators should be fired.

It's been almost two weeks and no words at all from steam. friendly reminder to everyone : do NOT buy a single game on steam until they fix the issue.

Message to the Valve.

If you didn’t notice yet, the French translation team on the STS decided to overstep the official French language in order to impose “inclusive writing”, which consist on showing both gender of a word but separated by a median point “ • ” . For example: friends = ami•e•s instead of : amis (the masculine form is also the neutral in correct French). This is in fact a political activist way to write French, but still isn’t proper French.

I thought steam was a politically neutral platform? Isn’t the French translation team overstepping your general Terms of use too by embracing this kind of activism? And this isn’t only wrong French writing, but it’s also really hard to read for dyslexic people (which i was, thats why i react on this) and incompatible with most devices which read texts for visually impaired people.

Hope you will fix this situation quickly, have a nice day.

Agreed with Ad Victoriam. Please remove these points.

As said into the famous newspaper "Le monde", the official group "Académie française" who normalize the french language said that this kind of writing "results in a disunited language, disparate in its expression, creating a confusion which borders on illegibility".
https://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2017/10/26/l-academie-francaise-met-en-garde-contre-le-peril-mortel-de-l-ecriture-inclusive_5206492_3224.html

So the French translation team on the STS use a mistaken writing which is hard to read, only for claimed their own political opinion.

From the translation sheet[www.dropbox.com], they don't want to use parentheses like it's always been done for the "sake of consistency." It makes absolutely no sense and after some research, the French Academy doesn't recognize this form of writing and the former Prime Minister banned it[www.lemonde.fr] from official texts.

Written at the beginning of page 8:
Note : il convient de ne pas utiliser les parenthèses pour inclure la forme fémininepar souci de cohérence.

Translates as follows:
Note: It is best not to use parentheses to include the feminine form for the sake of consistency.

Personally, it isn't a problem for me since I have Steam set to English, but I can see it being a huge problem when used as it slows down reading more than anything.

And another former prime minister had said that inclusive writting should not be used too. I'm not in favor of the parenthesis that much, it make reading the text more difficult. But if you want to use them at introduction, for example : "Cher(e)s client(e)s" / "Dear customer", I think it's gonna be fine for the most part of the french community. As long as you dont put it everywhere. But the problem with inclusive writting is the political meaning of it and the fact it's not a part of french language at all, contrary to the parenthesis.

I don't understand how we didn't have any answer for more than 2 weeks.
How does Valve allow the french STS to destroy a language and to despise everyone that suffer dyslexia or anyone with spelling disorders.
Please, let Steam be neutral and apolitical.
