Integrate Folding @ Home to Steam? (or promote it?)
We are an army of computing power, why not use this?
Gamers tend to have powerful machines.

My main computer is now contributing about 17000 + 252000 units (cpu + gpu) per day for project 16418 (COVID-19).
I've joined team 223518 (LinusTechTips) but we could have a Steam team instead.

Does it makes sense?

Minimum requirements : Intel P4 1.4 GHz processor or newer.
It's safe to say "everyone" has it.

The GPU is way more important than the CPU apparently (based on my 2950x vs RTX 2800)

This is about contributing if we can, and exploiting our resources.
When asked, people should know it will use their IDLE machine, produce head and use electricity.

There's already a Steam powered team, an old one in fact (back when we had the old forums).

Good to know. I see the group is pretty small: a year ago, there were 90 millions active steam users, imagine using even 10% of that.

As I said with the last version of this topic... NO! I don't want bloatware added to Steam. If you want to run folding at home, you use their software. I don't want it built into Steam at all just like I don't want a bunch of other external software that has nothing to do with gaming built into Steam.

I have a mostly older system. I do not want this running in the background, if I did I would install folding at home. Even if I had a new computer system I would not want this running in the background as I have other stuff I would be doing with my system. I also don't want my system running full out 24/7.

If you want to promote it, put the info about it on your profile, post in groups that allow it and move on. It seems so important to you, why have you not put any of the needed info into the text box at the top of your profile.

You would only have to say "no" when the question is asked.
It would not be "resident", only started for the one interested in helping.
As for my profile: this is about scale. A user profile doesn't cut it.

Your claim was ""Gamers tend to have powerful machines". That was what I was responding to and I find that claim a BS one.

People who want to contribute, can do so. They only have to visit the website of F@H.

I doubt Valve will integrate it, as there is no point for them to do so. Creating awareness also isn't the job of Valve, so I doubt they'll do that either.
Users have the possibility to advertise it on their profiles or through Steam Groups, as has been mentioned. That's seriously the most you can hope for here.

No.

This is just a case of "I-found-Jesus" syndrome.

You aren't going to be doing complex jobs like SARS-CoV-2 on such an ancient processor like a Pentium 4 1.4GHz. F@H allocates jobs that are within the timeout for the target system. My GTX1080 has been getting GPU work units on and off whenever work units are available for me to process.

You don't seem to understand... I don't want it in Steam AT ALL. Its bloatware that has nothing to do with gaming.

I would prefer if everything was optional in parts that were not even included in steam unless you download it. Just like DLC is for games.

IF Valve set Steam up like this, I would not care, because I wouldn't even have to have it or a bunch of other stuff on my system that I don't want. But at least most of that other stuff is gaming related. Folding at home is not and should not be integrated into Steam.
