x86 is a lineage of processor architecture. This is why you can fine plenty of software labeled x86 64-bits. x86 dosen't forbid something from being 64-bits.
I know that's an irrelevant detail in the scope of that discussion but I thought I could contribute a bit this way since I know jack about modern macs.
