Had you bothered to look there, you would see that catching cheaters is working quite well.
read again please.
im not saying that they don't catch cheaters, im saying that they need to catch them so they can "never cheat again."
They will never cheat again, on the account that was banned. They cannot prevent a person from creating a new account to play on, so if that's what your suggestion was based on then it's doa.
as long as they got you're ip you will not be abel to make eny new accounts, and using a vpn you will automaticly get denied trying to make a new account. you are basicly done for good.
And then they use an ISP which doesn't do static IPs reconnect their router and suddenly they are an entirely different IP and someone else on that ISP is complaining to your company "Why can't I play multiplayer" as they got the banned IP that day and potentially this might even be their first time playing.
1. 3 people in this home play online. Ban the IP linked to this property and no-one will be able to play. How is that better? Or what about students that live on campus where 100's of student could all use the campus internet to play online. Internet cafes? Banning the IP can result in them all being banned.
Basically that's punish all that live at the same location regardless of who actually cheated.
2. Plus you don't need to use a VPN to spoof your IP. If I want to cheat and IP bans were a thing I'd Spoof it and keep changing it each time I got banned.
Start banning IP how those that may or may not even play the games in question.
Just a few reasons why IP banning is not a good option.
The OP clearly wants VPNs outright banned AND IP bans for cheating so everyone will only be able to cheat 'once'. There is no requirement to use a VPN to hide your IP if nothing is ever going to happen related to your IP.
not sure what you are talking about, if i change my ip, my isp will always know it's me. however companys will not, but my isp knows ho i am, so if im doing crimes it takes seconds to know where i live and where to send the police. there is tons of stuff witch are constantly tracked, one witch is you're mac adress witch can not be changed, so you can change you're ip as mutch as you want, people witch have the data "ISP" will always know it's you.
Cheating isn't a crime. And yes your MAC address can be changed by:
* Replacing your network card (MAC address is network card specific)
* Just changing the MAC address on the card with software (which most support)
* or just having your router lie about the MAC address packet source and rewrite the packet when it comes back.
Your ISP has very limited information for identifying you, they know it's still you unless you:
* Switch ISP
* Change address and payment information and sign up as an entirely new account (they don't know Joe Blogg from 24 Arbitrary Road is the same as Joe Blogg from 12 Different Road unless they use the same credit card number)
* Have your partner/room mate sign up for the account
* Move into a share house which already has internet so you just have to pay a little hell in some cases with this you can be paying cash and the share house people don't even know who you are at all.
There are still options which you would think leave someone trackable but don't. We aren't quite that far along the path of no-privacy.
If you do not like, travel to china in few years. Than you can rate down cheaters and destroy their reallife, because you don't like it. With id and real name compulsion naturally simple. Or wait any longer. EU want build up the same system but we get everything presented in salami tactics over a longer period of time.
Sure to control all, is a thing where companys start to drool.... even Valve Corporation with their (illegal) data mining and store data for years procedure is no exception, but i hope some things never will come because some want to be protected from "cheats" >.<
Think about institutions too, which are hiding behind a vpn or proxy service, like some universitys or official places, internet cafes, military and many places more on this planet. What's happening with censored countries? There are enough with only VPN access. Vpn/DNS/Proxy is more important as ever in these days.
It makes more sense to fight against laziness, unfairness, the ability to gain an advantage over others... or in other words, human characteristics. Fight against freedom too. We're already loosing it more and more and especially Valve with their censoring, opinion steering and region lock system is a good example.
Do not forget what Steam as service actually is/was... a centralized product platform which deliver DRM in first place. They have by far no right to do some things, even if they pretend to.
Of course, Valve and other companys have something against it... consumers can protect theirself with it from some nasty business behaviours.
And... whatever some company do, forbid... no matter what they do... some "problems" will
ever show up...at every time, past and future. Ridiculous that people don't get that.
Always be careful with things that are wished.
As for MAC addresses, unless the client is uploading that information it stays within the network branch that uses them.
I guess youve never seen these letter in this order?
D - H - C - P
Add in "temporary leases"; and your idea is DOA.
I use a VPN. They are used for far more than "scamming". That is the stupidest thing Ive read on these forums this month.
