Downloads while playing offline/online games
Hello, I have issues with downloads of updates while playing. At the moment there is only an option for chosing download while playing or download while not playing games. I have hundreds of games in my library, which means I get updates daily. While I like downloads while playing offline-games (singleplayer), I don't like download of updates while playing online-games (multiplayer), for obvious reseaons (online games get really slow while downloading).

What I would like is a category of online-/offline games, so steam can differ dynamically, when to download or stop download, depending what games I currently play.

You can set individual games to now allow downloads while the game is running.

Steam doesn't know when you are playing MP or not. It simply knows you are playing the game.

Thats why I suggest a category, where steam can differ. You can also leave that choice to players wether to tag it as offline or online game, if its a game where you can play both modes.

The Steam client can not tell if you are playing MP or SP.

So, tagging them is pointless.

1. Player tags it as offline or online
2. A boolean at games with 0 and 1, where 0 is offline, 1 is online game.
3. a checkbox where you can decide "only download while not playing games tagged as online"
4. Steam looks at that checkbox and then at the boolean, where it sees 0 for download or 1 for not download updates.

You want to tag 5,000+ games 1 by 1? Because that is what some people would have to do.

I do not have 5000 games in my library and its up to the player to tag it or not and use that function. And there are games you tag 1 time ever you regular play. Even if you would play 200 different games a day, you would only have to tag it once.

To be fair, you also have to do that if you want games to only update when you press play. That one could use a global toggle, actually.

It depends on situation actually. Steam has a total of 30 000 games actually and most people have under 1000 games. I have much less, but get updates daily, while playing either offline or online. I would need to alway toggle between download while playing or not download while playing which I often forget, which gets a bad result when playing online games.

So it would be perfect for my situation to tag the games and just get downloads when I do not play online games. If I would turn it off at all, I wouldn't get ever downloads again, or would have to wait for updates before I could play a games again, as I always want to play, when starting steam.

As more steam waits with this idea, as worse the situation gets for players with many games, as they have to tag games they already have, instead could be triggered at getting the game for first time.

You could try setting your download limit kind of low so there is still room for online to be playable.

Already tried that, but somehow my games still get really slow, also they would not get finished with downloads, I only open steam a few hours a day. The only solution was to stop all downloads while I played, but I would like steam intelligent enough to do that. And with my suggestion above with just a flag player can set, an checkbox under the once steam already have for downloads, it would be pretty easy to implement.

I do not see a bad site of that new option, people who do not like tagging their games, just leave it.

I checked and yes, you can. Bottom option on this: https://imgur.com/a/I0KxtqP

Ah thank you, guess Steam already thought about "network hungry" games which might suffer from download, while others are fine with.
