if a game dev wants to do a poll, they can do it in their game forum. it will only create spam in the regular forums
Fix for that:
An autogenerated subforum (like the VAC Forum) for each section / game designed for polls
If moderators / dev want to restrict this for moderators / devs only they can do so, otherwise you can post your own poll.
There is no reason to think only of bad things. Actually such a feature might help in many situations to increase the experience of a game / event
I mean if that is the case then a simple question like "AMD or NVIDIA for GPU?" would be violating the guidelines...
Use the search function.
The search function leads me to more or less "polling threads" that are not closed yet.
And two times reading the "Rules and Guidelines for Steam" shows nothing that could be interpreted as "polling is forbidden"
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4045-USHJ-3810&l=english
The only time it would even be remotely useful is if it was
1) only available in game hubs
2) only developers could make them
3) only owners of the game could vote
I've seen a lot of developers doing polls according to their game or their hosted events. Some were well-desinged and nice to participate but some were just totally trashy but they could have been usefull for the devs actually. So if there was such a function especially community-dedicated devs like Overkill during the high-times of Payday 2 could get in touch with their community a bit easier or at least collect thoughts of their fans a bit easier -> this could lead to a better experience and better Patches.
Just some thoughts here...
2. Pointless mainly because it can be abused, and it's the same reason why we don't do Karma, thumbs up, or any kind of voting system for posts.
We had a voting system, it got abused to hell... Just like how someone would on Facebook, Reddit, or etc, that convince others, or make bot / spare accounts to spam.
3. The only way to make this work, is to be restricting to some limitations as Satoru said.
I could see this being used for Custom group forums at best.
The reason given (if any) is usually "prone to huge arguments" or the derivative of that "no polls".
The forums are for discussion and polls aren't discussion and just end up as meaningless spam threads instead.
I'm not making an account in each game developper website... That's ridiculous. And it's their forum, they can censor you.
Just imagine gamers making a "should we refuse to buy this game because X reason" poll in your forum. What do you do? Most would censor everything and ban the people behind it. For good or bad reasons.
We need our own forums.
Their forum, their rules, I think that was kind of self explain. Also promoting to tell others not to buy, or to spread hate, is one of the many reasons it's not liked. So again going back to 1st part it will create spam in the regular forum.
Then go make your own forum then...
Their forum? Their rules? Ok. Sure. Whatever. But why do you accept that? Don't you care about freedom? Your independance? Don't you have values pushing to revolt against that? Or you just lie down and take it?
And it's not hate.
I'm a gamer. I have values. I care about my games. Let's take games like Fallout 76. Or Diablo III. Epic fails. As a gamer, it's my duty to defend my interests.
Why should I accept a game full of bugs, poorly made to sell premium content to ignorant players with too much money? Why should I accept to lag in a single player offline game like Diablo III? Why do I need to connect to a server to play solo? I had Diablo II and Diablo I and I never had lag issues playing single player. Why should I accept this now? Why can't I play when the server is in maintenance? I REFUSE TO TAKE ANY STEP BACK; I only go forward.
If we accept this mediocre mindset, we are done. We will keep taking steps back, and back and back and we will be treated like vermin by the people we pay.
If I go to a restaurant, I want awesome food. And if the menu changes, it have to get better. If it gets worse... Well, I'm not coming back. As a customer, I keep people working for me in check.
Like my customers do with me. If I sell them a piece of bread for 1$ today. Tomorrow I will give them the same deal or a better deal. If I sell them a rotten piece of bread for 1$, they will tell me to get lost.
So I do my best. and they keep me in check. Same with game developers.
And sometimes, I need people with me to have some weight. And I need tools to gather them around me.
Don't buy Red Dead Redemption, the PC version is full of bugs. Wait for them to fix them, then we buy it. Fair, not?
And if many other gamers agree with me, then, we might force game developers to rise the quality of their products.
Of course it can be abused. But it's always better than to censor the consumers, the gamers, censor their communucation tools, deny them the right to group and fight for their rights and interests.
I'm more of a right to bear arms. You are allowed to buy bear arms and to claw the face of the rulers if they fail to do their job properly.
I don't understand people like you.
Are you a gamer?
I'm here defending your right to defend your interest and to form groups with others gamers to do so. For your freedom of speech.
How can you be against that?
