Suggestion: Steam Avatar
I would like the ability to create an avatar in some kind of character creator similar to the one in City Of heroes. You could full design this model, and then setup a simple scene to show them in your profile and in chat.

Now the real killer feature is that you also add an API for game developers to read this avatar, and when you are making a character in their game, it can let you import your avatar to the best of the games ability. I am not expecting that games reproduce an exact copy, but instead a best match. For example, if my avatar has red hair and green eyes, then my in-game character would also have red hair and green eyes by default.

Lol, Steam already has that with the oh so meh Salien showcase from that event a while back.

You have the Artwork and Screenshot showcases if you really want to show off your avatar/OC/persona/whatever you may want to call it depending on whether you do that from a game's character creator or just commission or draw your own artwork.

Seriously if Valve decides to do a proper avatar system that isn't the whatever saliens you can bet your life that it will be monetized to hell and back where most of the stuff will have to be bought off the market, just like the emotes and profile backgrounds now.

Hmm, I am un-aware of this Sailien system. Ill look for it, but the key in my suggestion is that there is an API so that games can auto generate a starting template for you.

The event is now over but some people still have them displayed on their profiles.

Yeah, that is not at all of what I had in mind. Not a 2d picture, but a full 3d avatar. Anyway, I am sure the steam people have seen this by now, so they will either consider it or not.

I like the ideas!
Can I suggest to have an in steam avatar creation option. And have this avatar be used in-game as well.

As if people wouldn't complain enough already about how much resources the Steam client uses.
That would bloat it to hell and beyond.
