"Your" profile is hosted on Valves site, so they can make the rules as they please, nothing unfair about that.
A crackdown on swearing is long overdue - especially when it blends into abuse.
Oh well, just go to a different gaming platform?

Valve can take/delete "your" profile if they see any reason to do it, so you actually do not own the profile at all.
A lot of users did not manage that, that's probably why it's now filtered.
Right, it's the others that are overly sensitive here.
No damage done.
Good thread and well thought out argument/suggestion on OP's end, I 100% agree with just about everything said. The rest of you though are approaching this thing from such an unreasonably passive viewpoint that it is hilariously sad.
Obviously OP doesn't mean he thinks he has a right to being able to disable the profanity filter, he is literally just making a suggestion to valve and is expecting to hear what other people think about the issue. If you disagree that the filter should be optional/removed then what you should be saying (in order to make any sense at all) is "I personally don't appreciate it when I am browsing through someone else's profile and I come across profanity, it makes me uncomfortable."
A good example is this post:
Not "VALVE CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT SHUT UP YOU HAVE NO RIGHT SIT DOWN AND ACCEPT IT YOU DOG"
(i.e.)
(This is not a personal attack on any of the quoted users themselves, I'm just pointing out the flaws in their arguments)
Jesus christ.
