The Steam UI needs a light theme choice
Many of us, about half the world's population, do not find dark themes easier to read; our eyes find light themes easier to read. There is well established research proving this.

I prefer the light theme as well. But I also like giving applications a personal touch by using my favorite color. That could be similar to Curse's interface before Twitch bought it ... only certain parts of the interface were in that color and the rest was white text on black background or black text on white background. I loved the look of it and it worked with dark and light themes. That theme made me so happy, I refused to use Discord for a long time. Until Twitch destroyed everything.
So much customization ... would be nice if every modern program would support that since it shouldn't be that hard to program ...

I appreciate the effort but themes would need to come from Valve and be versioned and tested to the Steam Client version before I would use them.
Steam has had the skinning feature for many years. I don't know if they've ever released their own skins, but as far as I can tell, these shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't tested this one yet though.

I've seen this with a program I use at work. Some use dark mode, some use light mode but it's pretty much a 50-50 split. I'm partial to dark modes myself but I wish I could change from dark blue to dark red or dark purple. Cus I'm a freaky boi.

Oh gosh I loved the old days when I picked a Miku Hatsune skin for Steam not because I'm a fan of her but because I just really liked having my Steam having that cool aqua color. I actually took the skin someone had made, deleted the background image with Miku, and left the colors there. (No offense to vocaloid fans; she's cool but I'm just not that into vocaloids.)

There were also skins in hot pink, orange, dark blue, etc.

That in turn reminded me of the good old days when Winamp was still a thing, and thus Winamp skins were a thing.

Yeah, dark grey and greyish blue is the most boring of color combo I could think of. I can see how even an aquamarine UI would look cooler.

It's not just about the research. It's also about people with certain neurological issues. I am prone to seizures and cannot look at dark color schemes. (I have to use a "Turn Off the Lights" extenstion to invert Steam's colors to even SEE this page with getting a horrible migraine, blurred vision, and spending my day puking in a bucket.) Now, with the new UI update, Air Theme no longer works, and I can't SAFELY access my Steam library at all! It's ridiculous that a bunch of people who want to burn their eyes out looking at inverted colors (light text on a dark background) take such pleasure in making fun of others and trying to make sure they CAN'T use software, because who cares about being friendly to those with disabilities, right? Apparently, people like me don't matter because we all have to jump aboard the latest yuppie hype train and be a drone like everyone else. Forgive me if this lack of basic consideration for others annoys me to NO END! I should have the right to use any software anyone else can, but, as it is, I have trouble finding a single piece of video editing or animation software I can use (those that HAD light modes have gotten rid of them to board that hype train to nowhere and alienate all the people who can't look at dark themes or who simply don't like them) and now Steam is making sure I feel unwelcome here, too! You don't see me out there saying that dark mode shouldn't exist, do you? No, if people want to use it (and possibly suffer permanent harm to their vision - the research is still out on that since it's a relatively new phenomenon), fine by me. But how DARE people act like I have no right to even be able to safely use Steam just because they want to get a laugh out of making fun of people with disabilities and cheering on Steam for going out of their way to ensure that people with certain disabilities can't access their purchased games on the platform!

that's a real issue, and it's a shame you have to explain that much to such judgemental people. Wish you the best

The exact same for me, eyes hurt, headache, funky vision, all within 3 minutes.

Have you polled the entire Earth population to claim that?
It's science that black text on white is easier to read than white text on back.

The problem of people is to set a too high brightness but when you have real problem to read, then lower brightness when necessary is much better than switching to white text.
light theme when
I have a blister behind the retina of my right eye, and dark mode is really difficult for me to read; I need the contrast of black letters on a white background. Someone mentioned a Steam Customizer -- does anyone here have any practical experience with that?

I've tried several online with mixed results and end up going back to the default theme and just squinting my eyes and trying to avoid reading the forums or looking for a game for long and just jump into a game fast.

The government loves to regulate everything, accessibility is something that deserves regulation.
