Disabled comments in Steam Reviews
A new feature has been silently implemented in Steam reviews: the option to disable comments.

Actually, it's the other way around, and that's the problem. Comments are now disabled by default whenever someone posts a review, and that person has to manually click the checkbox to enable comments.

Unless a vast majority of Steam users writing reviews don't want comment, which I'm pretty sure isn't the case, comments in reviews should be enabled by default, with the option of disabling them.

Many people who enjoy writing reviews, and enjoy being commented on their reviews, are likely to not even have noticed this new feature.

A global toggle is badly needed in this. I can only hope someone from Valve makes it a priority.
Yep, agreed.

This thread is over a year old, with 24 pages of comments they'll never read, and the only improvement they made to this failed update was adding the button onto the page where you write the review (where previously you had to edit it on the review itself)

But good luck.

This is a good idea, all on or all off, just in case someone starts trolling all your reviews or you change you mind.

FYI this thread was revived by a moderator who merged another thread, created 17 hours ago, into this one.

But even so, it was otherwise last posted in on August 4.

Can the option for reviews to allow comments be DEFAULT ON
I would like this too, yes.

Friends have let me know multiple times that I forgot to turn comments on for reviews I've written.

I understand some people don't like comments on their reviews, but it'd be so much more convenient for me to be able to change my default to "always allow comments", because (as of right now) I like allowing comments on my reviews.

Well what would be more convenient to you doesn't concern the rest of us, and I am not trading MY privacy for YOUR convenience.

This has been established many times already. The default state for other users does not concern you. I don't know why you keep making this personal.

1. Your profile isn't even set to private
2. Comments on reviews have absolutely nothing to do with privacy
3. A per-account global toggle would have no more or less impact than the current setup
4. ePrivacy is a nonsensical joke. For example, even after Steam integrated these changes, I can still browse every forum post you've ever made, even if your account was set to private https://steamcommunity.com/id/Vegosiux/posthistory/

Those are great points. The privacy argument is utterly misplaced.

My choice to opt in, not a forced default.

They absolutely do.

3. A per-account global toggle would have no more or less impact than the current setup

Agreed. Default being "off", of course.

4. ePrivacy is a nonsensical joke. For example, even after Steam integrated these changes, I can still browse every forum post you've ever made, even if your account was set to private https://steamcommunity.com/id/Vegosiux/posthistory/

My forum posts are made in a place meant for public discussion. Of course they are public.

Reviews are not. They're my little message on my lawn or my doormat. On my (leased) property.

Not sure where you live, but both a lawn and doormat are clearly visible from the public street around here. And unless the owner is outside or has the door open to invite you in, you can't feely comment on the message to him.

Its not on YOUR lawn. Its like going to Walmart, with a big sign that says "[Insert offensive thing here]!", and then expecting people to pat you on the head for being so smert and private.

But even if it was on YOUR lawn. You can't go plastering belligerently offensive objectively wrong things in public, and expecting people to be okay with that. You surely would get complaints from the neighbors about that burning crucifix in your front yard.

Just reinforces my point that the correct option is having reviews hidden from the store page.

Reviews are part of the profile, that's what Radene was referring to. Something that somehow gets missed by people. So yes, it is MY lawn.

You can post offensive things in reviews, they'll get reported, just like neighbours would complain.

Radene's analogy fits here.

Hiding reviews is anti-consumer, disabling comments isn't. Besides, that would imply that comments on reviews are more important than the reviews itself. Surely you can't mean that?
So all those well written reviews, either positive or negative, from people who don't want comments (yes, those people exist) should simply be hidden?

Indeed, and on your profile you can put whatever you want.

And thusly in the review...

Only if it was the developers subjectively hiding reviews, which wouldn't be the case.

So if a store hides reviews it's not anti-consumer? Right...

99% of the top reviews on steam are meme trash, so...

Either way, hiding the reviews would be an option, just like disabling comments.

Look how you cry when your review is about to be hidden, but then you effectively do the same thing by disabling comments. Hypocrites.

97,4% of the statistics are pulled from the arse. But you go ahead and show me games where 99% of the top reviews are meme trash. It's not on the games I look at.

And asking questions is apparently crying now? Simply because I believe a review to be a consumer tool and that comments on those reviews have no added value? Or is it because I don't want to enable people to go and try to "correct" others where they're out of place?
You might want to look at yourself before you start saying that others are "crying".

If the review is only displayed on your profile, then sure. Problem is when it makes it to the public store page.

Would be the consumer's option to hide the review, how is that anti-consumer? Its certainly less offensive than disabling comments.

No, they are public, since they are displayed as part of the store page and part of the reviews page for a product.

By your logic...

But you CAN point out "that person's lawn is unkempt" to others, such as to neighbors, to a homeowners' association, or to the local press if the problem is severe enough, and people can start talking about it.
