Plenty of games that where launched on CD/DVD had tons of bugs in them and to the point where they had to patch the game so much that all of the content on the disk had to be updated. That is through updates that the Developers provide through Steam.
You can download a game faster if you have a faster connection. I download a 50 GB game in about 5 minutes or so. So for me digital is lovely.
Or maybe you forgot about Daikatana?
I don't miss the discs being worn out and unreadable.
I don't miss having to reach the disc of the game I want to play in order to play it.
I don't miss the extra time of downloading and patching the game to. play online after the time of installing outdated files from disc.
I don't miss the lot of living space used by my discs library.
I don't miss being restricted to physical stock at the shop in order to buy a game.
Specially when I'm getting exactly the same game that plays and runs exactly the same. With a single installation.
Even when I was playing on a slow-as-a-snail internet connection for a long time the pros outweight the cons.
BTW. Don't bypass the filters. They're there for a reason.
Games have been so bad that they are unplayable...
Some Games won't even start, others are riddled with bugs,
& so much more...
I've never had problems that bad with a Physical CD Based
Game before, oO
I can't go & tell you that the Companies would have broken
the CD based Games as well, I dun really know, but from
my own Experiences...
I have seen a huge difference between Quality of a Game
on Physical CD vs. a Digital Game...
& i've seen these Differences in more modern Games,
so it's not like i'm bringing up something from the past, ~_~
Again, when you claim that the CD/DVD's had bugs through them,
& the fixes had to come through STEAM...
Don't those Games get linked to your STEAM Account? I'm not sure
what you mean by STEAM fixing the issues of a Physical Game?
What Games are you even refering to? As an Example, i'm not
saying Name everyone, just asking?
I know it won't last long, but i've still got like Windows 98 Based
Games, that work on Win10 with no issues, through CD's...
I've got GTA5, no issues...Skyrim & Watch Dogs 1 & 2, no issues...
My Sims 2 & 3 Games no issues... Battlefield 3, no issues...
But then I get Digitals of Games like Skyrim SD & Skyrim SE,
bugged, or heard do not Start at all from other people at all, I
heard GTA5 won't run on STEAM for some people... Watch Dogs 1,
without CD's don't even install the Language Packages the right
way, oO None of the Blaze Blue Games work Digitally on STEAM
for like most, not all, but most if not half the community... & I just
keep reading constant Negative Reviews on STEAM Store for many
Titles that are Digital saying how they are unplayable, oO
50GB Games in 5 mins.? Thats great, but what is your Connection,
& how much are you paying to get it, plus how close are you to that
tower?
Not everyone gets 50GB Downloads & Installs in 5 mins., oO
I'm pretty sure the majority of people don't... I'm aware people
pay the extra to get it... Not everyone does...
You also have to factor in that, with a Digital Game, that Game
runs through the Internet, so that Game can have frame drops
& skipping, & other problems, just because it runs from the Server,
where as a Physical Game may not even need that Server at all...
& can run smoother, & faster... (Games Without Internet Play)
EDIT: Consoles have CD Based games and they cannot get unlocked if CD is not in disk tray.
I don't miss the discs being worn out and unreadable.
I don't miss the extra time of downloading and patching the game to.
play online after the time of installing outdated files from disc.
I don't miss being restricted to physical stock at the shop in order to buy a game.
This was older Games... Newer Games don't have these issues anymore, oO
1.) I've seen that BluRay based CD's have a protected Covering that prevents
anything from breaking the CD's, prevents Scratches, & I dunno about Warn
out, but i've still got all of my BluRay's in perfect Condition, they look brand New
& I never had an issue with a BluRay being Warn out, oO
But then again, I still have DVD's & even CD's that are also in perfect Condition,
too... oO
2.) So far, i've only seen Rockstar resolve this issue with the Patching of Updates,
issue... Seems that the Physical GTA5 Game does not have that issue that you
are refering to... Don't believe me, check for yourself, oO The Game runs way
better on Physical CD's then i've heard the STEAM Digital version does, ~_~
3.) Again, I would like it if they did with Games like they do with Movies now,
I want a choice, Digital or Physical all in the same Package... ~_~
4.) You have these issues, but here is something that Physical does offer
that Digital does not...
Physical Games are worth something, I am not refering to a Game Shop,
or Game Stop, it don't matter if they are worth $50 from their original $60,
or if they are worth only $0.01 Cent... They are still worth something...
But Digital Games are worth $0.00 Nothing, from the time they are on the
Shop to the time you purchase, you are paying a Company $60 or more
for a New or Pre-Order Game that is worth $0.00 Nothing...
Even if you wait for a Sale, your still paying for something worth $0.00,
& things that are worth $0.00 can't be sold if you don't want them anymore...
Where as with Physical Games, you can still get money back, if you don't
want them anymore...
That is pretty sad, oO
the problem isnt the ditribution system
its your system
that is probably an issue, that i'd like to see resolved myself,
I think Rockstar does a pretty good job of this, because with Rockstar
I got 2 Copies of GTA5, & it makes everything so much better...
So ya, that is an issue, but I think it just really comes down to
how well people manage their CD's...
But there is an Upside to it as well... A Physical Based Game without
Internet requirement does not require the Servers from a Platform to
be running to play them, say STEAM or whatever has maintenance,
or the Servers go down, you can still play your Games, oO
The main issue, is that the Physical CD's Era was ending at a time
where Companies were actually solving the issues with those
CD's... They were solving the issues, but when Digital took over,
not every Company chose to fix the CD's issues, & just jumpped
into the Digital Era, where we now get Games that are broken
& Bought, & we are lucky if we can even get a refund at all, ~_~
as games get larger and more complex, more issues will be present in them. the more lines of code a game has, the more that can affect each other..
the game being in physical optical media won't stop the things you are complaining about, the bugs and stability issues will remain.. its not caused by the distribution platform, its caused by how the game is written
I think this says more about the games you choose to buy than the medium they are on.
It means the version donwnloaded through steam is always the latest version with the must up to date content and bug fixes. What's the point of a DVD or CD if the first thing you're going to have to do after installing it is download and install an update. Might as well you just download and install the latest version right off.
You can name any game that ever came on a CD.DVD
Multiplayer games always suffered frame drops due to network issues.this was a given even as far back as doom. But you're kinda displaying how little you know about games, or computers in genral here. Your games are not running over the internet, they are downloaded from the internet to your Hard Drive and rubn from that hard drive, just as a dvd game installs to your Hard drive.
but it would be nice if they offered a way to make your own cd with these games like basically burning them to a cd with the setup needing the code you have in your libary

If steam is crashing (Hence your motivation for THIS topic post), then it is your system causing that. As someone who grew up in a time well before digital downloads, I can tell you that i don't miss the "qualities" of physical media.
