use Snarl ? Use Growl-for-Windows ? keep current Steam-custom notifications?
then, how to support it?
All the user support screenshots - would have to be made twice, with native and domestic notifications? The less options are - the easier is user support, especialyl with less computer-versed users.
Then, what to do if Microsoft owuld drop this notifications from Windows 11 / LiteOS ?
If they do it for 1 system they will need to do it for all the systems. We will get people steaming for Valve to add it to their OS too.
The one we have is fine, they don't have to worry about scrambling to fix things if the OS changes their system.
And as far as I know, both of those companies each have far more developers dedicated to working on those browsers than Valve has people in total.
Also better to do your own thing, than rely on the OS to provide it for you because at any time the people that put out the OS could change things in such a way that it breaks the notification system some how.
Valve also doesn't have to rely on passing the info off to the OS, less programming needed.
I'm just wondering how it would be "better" than what Valve has now? The OP just claims it would be better but thats it.
I don't need the dictionary definition of what better means, I never asked what better meant. I want to know from the OP how they think it would be better if it was done through the windows notification system rather than the one Steam has now.
What is so bad about how its done with Steams version?
I've seen smaller apps use the native notification system on both mac and windows, think all the to-do and reminder apps out there. "better" is subjective but It would be more streamlined and I for one would prefer that they did use what the OS provides them with. The OS won't radically change to the point that everything has to redone, app dev's would go crazy. If anything they will probably provide more functionality.
Fun fact, there's a standardized notifications API across almost all operating systems, including Linux and macOS.
Doesn't work for its purposes, because the native notification system is automatically suppressed when running full screen applications, including non-exclusive full screen applications - i.e. what is colloquially called 'windowed full screen'.
Steam uses its own notifications so that it can hot-wire those in to also be displayed within full screen games if the Steam Overlay is enabled - as some of the primary uses are relevant when users are in-game; e.g. to let the user know some of their friends came online; started playing a game; are requesting them to join a game; or the player unlocked an achievement.
None of which would function acceptably for their purpose with the native OS notifications.
