Curse word filter
As often as I am on Steam discussions, I see hearts in sentences. Instead of blocking out the words with hearts they should use filters like Town Of Salem does, it's a really neat way of making sentences sound better than what most people make them.

A few examples below taken from Town of Salem's chat filter :

Tarnation = **ck
Snap crackle pop = **tch
Pillion = ***hole
Bumfuzzle = dumba**
Child born out of wedlock = bast**d

Almost any type of unsavory word could be filtered with something "all-age" friendly.
It's not an original idea, but it could be made into something different if Valve wants to.

I know this isn't going to get implemented as it's a little comic.

I actually support this.

The hearts make more sense considering their strategy. They want minimize undesirable behavior, in this case cursing. They use the hearts to obscure the entire word so it becomes more difficult for the offender to get their message across forcing them to censor themselves or end up with heart obscured post. Obviously most people can figure it out by context or quoting the post in question.
I like the hearts because when someone goes on a swearing rant it makes them look more like an idiot.

But the suggestion would make them look more like a posh 1800s noveau riche, which is a lot more entertaining.

Ditto. I think it would be much funnier.
I miss the ventilated youth from the old forum.

I can't actually think of an argument against that... lol

Ohhh I know, maybe have a check box. Unchecked its hearts, checked its posh 1800s noveau riche. :D

OHOOHOH 3rd option.... SMURF!!! Every swear word becomes Smurf. :D Isn't that smurftastic? They can go smurfin swearing all day and people will just laugh. :D

Course that does bring up the issue of spam then...

Wow it's been that long that people no longer remember why "jarate" is considered a curse word? Because it replaced/replaces pissed?

They already did this on the old web-based forum, for years and years. I don't know whether those words have been moved here or not, I usually just see the hearts and haven't seen a few of those 'key' replacements in a long while.

Seems like a word-to-word replacement filter would be much harder to maintain.
But the hearts are the joke. They don't need to censor words. It's a funny joke to signify how much the poster cares, by replacing the words with hearts.

On the old discussion there was a time when the hearts where replaced with puppy.

I don't recall how long Valve ran it but people who swore a lot basically got their entire post broken due to it.

So I don't think it'll happen again.

Also the actual system allows for filters to be reversible. It doesn't change the word, it just obfuscates it. That way if tomorrow that word stopped being filtered the word would be visible as if it was never removed.
You lose all that with a word replacer filter.

I'd however love seeing users whose avatar/profile pic is banned and removed to get some fancy and heartwarming name/profile pic instead of a number string and the "?" avatar.

You're an edgy kid who loves using Hitler as an avatar? Have fun with a puppy avatar and "Hugs & Rainbows" Profile name for a week. :lunar2019coolpig:

They should let the daughter of an employee, who's currently in the pink and unicorn phase of her life, design a profile and use that as a replacement.
