"Visual Novels" are not "Action" games.
I often search for the tags "Action" + "RPG", but so much of what Steam likes to show me are games with the "turn-based" or "visual novel" tags, two types of games mutually exclusive to action games. We're all familiar with the Steam game discovery experience being bogged down by endless shovelware, but this just makes things worse. With this, it's an unnecessarily tedious experience to try and discover games I'd like that I've never seen before.

Tags are user generated. If you think a tag is not fit for the game you can report it.
Ooooh. I didn't realize the "+" icon was to expand the list rather than add your own tag. I thought the search algorith was pulling up VNs and the like from the RPG tag alone; I didn't realize that games had more tags than were immediately shown. Welp, guess I've got some work to do.

Too bad nobody reports them, and trying to search for horror games just gives you ♥♥♥♥ like this

there are also VN's that have brief sections of varying gameplay (I hear Tomoyo After has section that plays as a strategy RPG)..

we also have things like BlazBlue, where the story mode is just an extended VN with the occasional Fight

Oh come on.

Visual Novels are not "First Person Shooter"'s

And don't give me any snark saying they are (hurdur, perverts >_>)

Besides this sort of open curation of tags is what Valve wants. It wants the floodgates to be entirely non existant. Hence a $100 fee per title and zero vetting afterwards.

This is pretty much what got me annoyed about visual novels in the first place. Its the blatant tag abuse by people making it impossible to filter them from my sight, due to idiots applying arbitrary tags. I wish that tags were only applied by developers.

Action does not auto mean FPS. Some have as theseraph say other mechanics Half of Tomoya after is Jrpg. Some has Strategyparts. So action yes but not seen any FPS yet

I know tags are pretty useless to go after since there are many who troll them. I whished them there only applayed by the dev, but that does not mean all dev's would apply the right tags since they wanna as many as posibly to see their game. Information on your game from other sources will always be best. Stopd looking at tags a long time ago

What about products that are missing tags that they should have? Like every VR product that comes out. None of them have the VR tag added in time before they end up in queues and on the Store page. Seems to me I've had to hit 'Not Interested' on every VR product that has come out because the tag was not there to be filtered by.

Having "Show VR content" unchecked on the preferences page does nothing if the tag isn't there to begin with. Missing tags, incorrect tags, tags placed by trolls, the tag system is flawed.

It's not hard to imagine a title that combines any of the tags. We've seen tower defence+fps, we've seen RPG+fps, good single player FPS typically contains some story, often with video included - why can't it e called a "visual novel"? "Action" game typically means 3rd-person view of the character - and it's often available in FPS titles as well.

I'd prefer seing some sort of "tags rating" for search. like "90% of users consider this title a FPS", "20% consider it a dating simulator" (e.g. one of GTA had that tag and indeed there's a part of the game for that) - so that I can search for something like "give me 80+% building sim list+80+% action game -(minus)80+% RPG"

The problem can be solved if "many" is still a minority of users that assign tags and you can input a % along with tag into the search box and use the "exclude" condition also.

Be reasonable, those hentai visual novels I linked are not "FPSes" nor "Horror" games.

Yes, some tags make sense for some games, but when people are plain trolling the tag system just because they can, that should not be tolerated.
Is it just me or are tags a total and utter mess?

Not sure they're a "total and utter" mess, but there is some messiness, so I don't put too much stock in them. They're approximate guidelines.
