Notifications When A Friend Joins A Game
Simple suggestion that I was just thinking of. Right now Steam gives a little pop up window whenever a friend joins any game. How having two additional options:
1. When a friend joins a game that you own.
2. When a friend joins a game that you have installed.

I get tons of notifications for people joining games that I have no intention of playing. This causes me to just turn off friend notifications completely rather than only limiting it to games that my friends are playing that I currently have installed (and may potentially want to join in).

The default setting that shows when a player joins a game shows the game they are playing .. and even allows you to click on the notification and gives you the option to join the game if you have it installed .. if you turn this feature off your only limiting yourself .. if the friends you have now dont play what you have then maybe find some more friends that play the games you like.

The idea is to only show popups from people who are playing games that you have installed instead of seeing popups for the tons of people on your friends list who are playing games that you don't have installed.

I don't get the issue. Right now you get pop ups on the bottom right of your screen whenever a friend joins any game (does no one else get these)? That's the default option in steam. My suggestion is to add an option to limit those to only when people join games that you currently have installed/own so that you don't get so many pop ups. Why does this suggestion not make sense?

On a serious note, you are getting way too specific. What you do not realize is that the whole purpose of Steam posting friends activity the way they do, is that they want the most exposure to as many games as possible. What better way then through your friends which is basically free advertising.

"Oh look, what a cool looking game, let me buy that."

Doing what you suggest would limit that exposure and Steam therefore Steam will never do it.

But this contention is contradicted by the fact that Steam allows you to turn off all the notifications completely.

It is further contradicted by the fact being bugged about people playing games too much might turn you off from buying them.
