Error message: "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet"?
Help please! I've been working on this for two days now. I've been googleing and trying to figure it out myself, but I can't. So I get that error everytime I try to launch my steam. At first it tries to update steam, it stays on 0% for about 1-2minutes and then the error said in the title pops up. Although im 100% my connection is great and connected. >>>I own a 3G internet, it has never been a problem before, more than a year, so I couldn't belive, that it's the one effecting this<<< At first I was able to launch it in offline mode, but now I've ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that up, too. So before you start helping me, heres what I've already tried to do:

*I checked both my TCP and UDP ports, both working correctly without any failures.
*I tried deleteing and renameing both .BLOB files.
*I tried reinstalling steam.
*I tried deleting everything but steam.exe and steamapps, and then launch steam.exe.
*I tried to use another steam.exe file downloaded from internet and launch it.
*Obviously I've tried restarting my computer.
*I tried restarting the 3G stick, too.
*I tried installing a fresh copy of steam installer from steamcommunity.com.
*Firewalls, anti-virus ETC has been turned off.
*I haven't done any changes on my computers drivers or what ever other devices.
*I tried deleteing some files in REGEDIT.
*I tried using TCPView to find another connections to get connected to "www.steamcommunity.com".
*I have no programs interfereing the steam launching.
*I've ran a HiJackThis scan and here's the log: http://www.upload.ee/files/2862385/hijackthis.log.html
*Tried kicking the computer.

Im sure I even left something out, I've tried EVERYTHING I've found on the internet. ANY IDEAS? This is scaring the ♥♥♥♥ out of me after knowing, some guys are still behind this problem after 3-5 months.

Please help. No other issues has ever ocurred to me with steam.

I had this problem after having to reinstall a bunch of programs for other reasons. It turns out my peerblock was preventing steam from getting its update. So make sure you have nothing like peerblock, peerguardian, or any VPN

I've been having this problem for about two weeks now. I just realised though that my mother was able to disconnect steam from the internet using her browser. If anyone knows how to do this then please reply.

I had the same issue and I tried almost everything that was mentioned in this thread. I thought I might have been an issue with the firewalls because that seem to be the common issue. Then I can across a comment saying to uninstall Norton. When I went to go try that and I noticed that there were some issues that need to be fixed, so I fixed them. After that I tried launching steam and it started working fine again.

Running as administrator fixed this for me.

If you read the thread you would realize that many people have fixed the issue and many different problems can cause this issue. The one thing we do know is that it is on your end, not Steams.
