Sims 3 CD, Sims 3 Expansion from Steam.
I've bought the Sims 3 retail in Store and installed it from the CD (So, not from Steam). Afterwards, I've received the Sims 3 expansion pack through Steam. However I am unable to install the expansion pack, because Steam isn't able to recognize the Non-Steam bought Sims 3 base game.

Is there a way for Steam to recognize the Sims 3 base game from the CD?

Sorry but no, you have to own the base game on Steam to be able to use the expansion packs from Steam. I take it you recieved the expansion pack either through trade or as a gift? Because the store won't usually allow you to buy the expansions unless you already have the base game.

I've received it as a gift.
Is there any ways to return the gift?

Once you've redeemed it, no, you cannot return it.

Oh, I see, how deceiving.

Thank you.

Not really. They specifically say so when buying it. Heck, you can't buy it if you don't have the base game. The person who bought it for you will have seen this, they should have mentioned it.

Steam never stated on the store page that the SIMS3 must be purchased through steam, only that you must have the sims3 installed on steam to play. Ambiguous and duplicitious and in Australia illegal to not offer a refund.

How could the person buying the gift know that the person receiving said gift cannot install this particular game on steam, when there are many other non-steam games that can be? Again borderline illegal and deceptive practices. Probably a reason steam chooses(like many other online multinational entities) not to have registered offices in Australia. They'd be in court everyday:)

Because when you're on the store page it will say

Downloadable Content

Requires the base game The Sims™ 3 on Steam in order to play.

It's very clear on the store page

The store pages for the DLC all say "Requires the base game The Sims™ 3 on Steam in order to play." There's nothing ambiguous about it.

The copy is retail. Nowhere does it say on the store page that it must be 'purchased from the steam store' only that it requires it. If i make an error well tough for me, but if steam acts in a misleading and deceptive manner then it should refund.

Why then can i register 'peggle' as a non steam game which i own retail, but not 'the sims 3' which i also own retail? Where on the store page does it say it must be a steam purchased copy btw?

Please read what it says on the page

Requires the base game The Sim3

ON STEAM

in order to play

In a giant purple box above the "Add To Cart"

Other than beating you with a club it does a good job of warning you.

"Requires the base game The Sims™ 3 on Steam..." Operative words "ON STEAM". If you add a non-Steam game it's not on Steam. How is this concept difficult to grasp? You don't get a refund because your level of comprehension is particularly poor.

That is correct; ON STEAM. My previous post(#11) stands. Thanks for your link to the store also, I guess you think i have neither read it nor taken a copy for my records. I guess you need to read the page, not just throw a link and cut and paste.

And to address the magical #11 post

Some retail games can be activated on steam. But again these are only a few and generally are outlined quite clearly on the boxes that the game 'requires' steam like Civ5, DeusEx, Hitman Absolution, etc.

Note some games at retail are on steam but cannot be activated on steam. Like the recent Assassin's Creed 3 for example. So if you buy AC3 at your local store and then try to activate it on Steam it will fail.

The fact that you can activate some games on steam isn't an indication you can do it for all games.

I'm unclear why you're so smug, since... the store page makes it clear you need to have the Sims3 ON STEAM. And I clearly both indicated the relevant section on the store page, where that was located, and linked to an example on the store for reference. And I even outlined the relevant section since you seemed to ignore it despite me pointing it out in excruciating detail. TWICE
