Why does downloading games take so long?

It takes much less time for me than it would ever take to install from disc.

What kind of internet connection do you have? Have you checked that Steam has the right connection speed and download region listed in the Steam->settings->Download+Cloud tab.

If it does, have you tried switching to a different region to see if you get a better connection?

I've never got problems of low bandwidth from steam.

I generally download between 3 - 5 Mb/s. Most likely it's a problem in your connection.

It also depends on your internet connection; ever since i switched to u-verse i been going pretty slow.
