Pc problem, everything opens in Notepad documents. Need help.

Hey guys, I kinda have a problem here. I tried to find a document on my pc, which used to be an exe, but now it was an LNK file, and opened it with notepad. Now EVERY single thing on my pc changed into notepad documents. Google Chrome, System restore, steam itself, etc. It does work when I get links through for example steam. Programs I already opened like steam and google chrome stayed the same, until I exit those.

I already had this problem once with Winrar, everything changed into Winrar corrupted files. I solved that by making a new profile, but that was a pain in the arse, downloading every single thing again and replacing every single thing ALL OVER AGAIN.
It just is always on the profile it happens on, no other single profile.

Please help, I already tried methods like some things with RegEdit, And the properties, which didn't really work, or I must've done them wrong.

This sounds like your PC is infected with a virus or malware of some sort - you could try running an antivirus (I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials[www.microsoft.com])

However with such widespread effects I would be reformatting my hardrive and reinstalling everything from scratch to be sure I was rid of it.

Well, not any easier option, are you sure? :/ This profile is all that's infected, and I did a virus scan 2 days ago, it didn't say anything. Defragmentation too. If there isn't any easier option, thanks anyway. ;)

I think .lnk file is a filetype for shortcuts..i think when u opened your file with the notepad you accidently activated the checkbox to assoicate .lnk files with notepad in general, this leads to your computer opening all the shortcuts with notepad instead of directing to the linked executables.
You could try associating .lnk files with the explorer again...guessing from the wiki page explorer can handle em.

Something (or someone) changed the .lnk files (the file extension of the shortcuts) to be opened with notepads, which renders shortcuts unusable.
Try this article anout resetting .lnk file associations[support.microsoft.com] and see if it helps.
I'd suggest what Kiya said and do an antivirus/antimalware sweep on your computer. Some malware applications like to do that sort of stuff.
