In game chat issue!

When I'm on skype with my friends and we're playing something like the Hidden or Killing Floor, all of them are able to use the in-game chat, but when I try it, nothing happens. I always have it enabled and I know the correct button to push, but it never seems to work. Any ideas of a setting I have that may be blocking my ability to chat?

As far as I know.. Skype doesn't have a overlay...

Could you tell me if you're using Steam chat or Skype chat to chat?

Skype chat. My friends always use Skype when we game, because we only care about chatting amongst ourselves. However, they were all able to ALSO talk on the Hidden and Killing Floor whilst in a skype chat, but I wasn't able to personally.

So you mean you alt-tab out of the game to chat, and it happens to not work properly?

Try to type something in a notepad (to see if you can type outside of the game, and to know it this is related to Skype, Killing Floor settings or OS settings)

It looks like that your game is still in fullscreen, what means that your keyboard typing is sort of still "active" in the game.

I don't alt-tab out because I can use my skype while all my games are up, as do my friends. They just seem to be able to chat in both skype and in game, I can hear it as an echo in game because I hear it om skype seconds before. We use alt-tab all the time when waiting on loading screens, etc. but we can talk without alt-tabbing.

Well.. if you can talk using Skype.. what's the problem then?

Anyway.. this makes it more difficult to find the cause, because if you're using the Steam overlay to chat and Skype to talk (and chat?), I don't see any logic in that :/

Does it only happen in Killing Floor, or also in other games?

Edit: To clarify: do you mean with "in-game chat" the chat from the game itself (like when pressing 'Y' or 'T') or Steam's overlay chat?
Because if it's the chat from the game itself, then maybe you're pressing the wrong button ;)

I apologize, I really wasn't that clear! Haha, what the problem is is the ing ame VOICE chat lol. I realize I didnt stress that in my other replies or intial post, so any idea on the voice chat?

If I'm correct you have both Skype voice communication AND Steam voice communication open to talk with your friends, right?

If so.. that might be the cause of this, and you should only open/use one of them

Well yes they are both on and the thing is my friends have the ability to skype chat AND press the button to talk in game and I'm just wondering why they have the ability to do so and not me haha

I think I now get your problem :)

There is an option in Steam Settings (View --> Settings --> Voice) what says: "When voice chat is active:"
Put that on: Use a push-to-talk key to transmit voice (I recommend using 'X' as key)

Also go to the game's settings at the Sound or Audio tab to see if there is a similar "Voice/Push-to-talk" option and change the key to X

Edit: it might be in the Controls tab too :)

I usually make sure all the options for voice are enabled and it still doesn't usually work. Any idea why it might not?

Have you tried my solution yet? Because I can't think of any other thing what can cause this, sadly enough :/

There are a lot of possible factors what can cause it, so it's a bit hard to explain from a distance :)
