Preload apparently doesn't mean what it implies
Sitting here waiting for Torchlight 2 update, even though I pre-loaded it late last night. What' the point of pre-loading a purchased title if I'm going to be required to spend 10 minutes downloading it again when it launches? That's what pre-loading is supposed to prevent.

I know what you mean. I pre-loaded the game but despite them releasing the game it shows "Update paused". So I manually unpause it and it jumps to 100% then goes back to "Update paused" again. I've tried the file validation and this all shows as ok. I've tried running it and I get a Steam error stating "Disk IO failure".

Mine's preloaded and it still won't let me play. :(

I'm wondering why mine refuses to download, even after the pre-load. Clicking resume does nothing but automatically go back to paused.

I have tried to get on the site of Runic Games, the devs of the game, but somehow its not accessable, so something tell me things have gone wrong big time..

I'm really disappointed with having to download the game again, I have a pretty horrible connection to begin with, so it sucks that I'm having to wait an extra day to play, especially since I got out of work early...

Pre-load implies you load a very large portion of the game in preperation for the release, not the entire thing. Otherwise you'd be able to play it.

I had no problems at all with it, when the game released it took 2 minutes to download the finishing bits and I was in game. 10 minute downloads sounds like you have bad internet,

The Steam pre-load text description actually says something to the effect of play immediately when the game is released, so I'd say it rather explicity does not imply a further download. I have decent internet, but I can only get the speed that Steam sends the download to me.
I'm pretty sure Steam can lock out the ability to play games at will, just like they can keep you from launching the game simultaneously on two different computers with the same account, or even take away your game license for violation of terms. I'm guessing Runic had some last minute changes they wanted distributed before release.

I think playing 2 minutes after release pretty much counts as immediately. At least legally it does. Also no, steam locking you out of a game can not change you being able to play it. If the preload gave you 100% of the files, you could run it reguardless of what steam wanted, they would be on your computer, if you were computer saavy in the slightest bit you could figure out how to.

I've preloaded several games with steam, including this game and the recent borderlands 2. Everytime there is always the bare minimum files they keep from you to keep the game from running properly that you quickly download on release. Yes, borderlands 2 did this as well.

just a guess but maybe there was some sort of patch after the game company gave steam the game to put on there servers and the update is a patch as pre-realse patches happen alot

Pre-load does not imply you get everything to run the game. You will have to de-crypt the files already downloaded and download the remainder of the software so it will run.
