Name of an old space game...

So, this has been driving me crazy lately. I'm trying to think of an old game from like... late 90s, early 2000s. The game was played almost entirely on a star map, no space flight sim, not sid meyer's civ style. Starmap exploration and space colonization. It maybe have been slightly obscure... I remember picking it up really cheap at walmart or something.

The most memorable things I can remember about it was the race creation page... there were a few presets you could pick from, or create your own race, I dont remember there being many/any visuals involved, but you could choose the traits about your race. There were three slider bars, basically for the enivornment your race could live in, one was temperature, the others I think might have been atmosphere/air, and gravity? If you had a wide range, you could basically populate anywhere but your pop expansion would be slower, but having a tight range would only let you populate a few planets, but you would have a higher growth rate. I remember very specifically in the creation page that there was one trait called "Bleeding Edge of Technology."

Edit: One game that it looks very similar to is Space Empires, but I dont think that was it.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? I've dug through google and can't find anything about it.

I think the game you are thinking of is Stars! developed by Jeff Johnson and Jeff McBride and published by Empire Interactive in 1995 - here's a wiki page that describes the gameplay ->

Masters of Orion (I think there were at least 3 of them)

Of course the pic kind of reminded me of Sword of the Stars(Or one of the sequels) because of the oversimplified star map and straight-line routes.

Another one that I actually picked up was called Hegemonia:Legions of Iron. Its got a nice space millitary base on the cover. Its a game where SPY ships are among the most important unit.

Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain would be my suggestion if it's not one of the others mentioned, but yeah, you've basically described the whole space 4x genre, so you'll probably find something very similar at least :)
