Playing on Linux, maybe that makes a difference.
Valve supports XInput, that's not directly supporting the Xbox Gamepad. If you noticed nearly every page for games that has Gamepad support it shows the Logitech F710. Which supports both XInput and DirectInput. If anything this would be an indication that Valve is pushing Logitechs gamepad more than anything.
There are drivers to get PS3 Gamepads to work. Unfortunately it's a lot more work than it's worth.
Microsoft made their controllers play nice with Windows using the drivers they did.. As previously stated, you could check out the Logitech 710 though.. They're pretty nice if you're just against an Xbox controller.. But imo the 360 controller is among the best feeling around.
