My in game audio keeps cutting out.
Whever I play a steam based game the sound keeps randomly cutting out. Sometimes it lasts for hours just fine, other times it only lasts for about a minute. I've found that by changing the setting "Mute game when in background" and applying the change, the sound is restored, however after a little while the sound will cut out again and I'll have to repeat the procedure.

Example
-Sound cuts out
-I uncheck the "Mute game when in background" box and apply the changes
-Sound comes back for a short while
-Sound cuts out again
-I check the "Mute game when in background" box (which was still unchecked from last time)
-Sound comes back for a short while
- Repeat

It seems like it happens most often on TF2 but that could just be because that's the game I play most of the time. It's also pretty simular to how the recent flash update makes youtubes audio cut out randomly (but unrelated, I fixed that a while ago).

I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling steam after messing around with some game files for a while and deciding to take the easy (ie, lazy) route and the problem persists.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It's pretty annoying.

What kind of sound card are you using? Also, how fast is your processor?
I'm fairly certain the sound card is a "Conexant Smart Audio HD" but I don't know how to get the specs for that itself.

Here are some other specs
Running windows 7
Manufacturer: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L755
Processor: Intel Pentium CPU B950 @2.1GHz 2.1 Ghz
RAM: 4 GB
System type: 64 Bit

It's not exactly a gaming laptop, but it can run 30-60fps on close to high settings just fine and I've never had this problem before. I never edited any of my files either. I just remember it started after a steam update (not sure which one). The sound works just fine when I do everything else so I don't think the card itself is bad.

Based on my own experience, that's your problem. Toshiba blows.
Thanks for the Necro, but I've found the problem is that it's detecting headphones that aren't there.

Toshibas are just fine, this one is probably only acting up because it got dropped about 12 feet (dogs, let's leave it at that). Aside from the audio issue it works fine and I fixed that issue by just using my headset.
Really? I have the same model of toshiba and it blows. My first hard drive died, it uses half its RAM at startup (unless that's normal), it takes a full minute to load a page, and it shuts off for no reason if it is plugged in with the battery. This last one has driven me to the point of using it like a slightly mobile desktop.
have you find the problem now ?
The problem was his computer finding nonexistant headphones. His solution was just to use his headphones.

If you go down several posts you'll find another reason toshiba sucks. The problem for me has now migrated to Youtube as well. I would just use headphones, but my jack is broken.
Try muting steam in the windows audio control panel. It worked for me.
I have the same problem but i dont understand what was the solution. Can you plz help me?
