Error (Missing App Configuration)
I have not been able to install my games in Steam today, either from local backup or from Steam download. IT gives me an error "An error occurred while installing Far Cry 3 (missing app configuration)" then it has a link for "more information". Well that link takes me to a page that says "Help Desk Error: The specified article does not exist or you do not have permission to view it".

This has happened with both Far Cry 3 and Deus Ex Human Revolution. Please help?

Nevermind. I uinstalled Steam, rebooted, reinstalled Steam and seems to work now. Unfortunately when you uninstall Steam it blows away any games you downloaded and installed. Seems it should give you the option to retain game downloads.

I had this with Far Cry 3 - I don't know if this is what fixed it but I started installing another game first (Far Cry 1) then went back to installing Far Cry 3 and it worked,

Had the same exact issue trying to re-install Skyrim. Did exactly what you did HTWingNut and lost my entire New Vegas directory. Guess it's time to buy an external hard drive to back-up everything that Steam may destroy. I agree that it's very un-gamer friendly not to be given the option to retain game downloads. doesn't even cover it.

Yeah. That's one thing about Steam, it's nice but stuff like that is never taken into consideration. They need a much better way to backup your games too, so it manages your backups with every update too.

I found this solution: Shutdown Steam and delete this file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\appcache\appinfo.vdf". Try again.

I've tried everything suggested but can still only install one game, and that was after 50 attempts from a retail dvd.

Of 50gb backup, 0 works :(

Tried everything to no avail:

Reinstall steam
Reinstall windows
Delete appinfo.vdf
Log on as administrator
Changed download location
Tried beta

^^ done all of these maybe 20 times each.

I have Dishonored on retail disc and that is the only thing that has started working when before it gave the same nondescript error. Surely the problem is with steam?

Well, I think the problem is with steam, because there is a lot of threads around the forum about this problem. If I discover something more about this problem I'll put here.
