Online to offline

I have a problem: I'm trying to get Steam to go into offline mode, but whenever i try, it just pops up again in online mode. As we have a limit to our internet usage, I really want to be able to play my games without Steam running in the background, using valuable data.

Hi Daniel. Steam will always run in the background whilst you are playing your games. If you click 'Steam' at the top left, and click 'Go Offline', that should keep you offline until you next tell it to.

I know that, and when I press it I see the pop-up saying that some functions won't be available, and I press the "go ofline" tab... and it restarts in online mode.

May or may not work (I presume you're on windows, if you're on linux, you should be able to figure this out on your own):-

First of all, close steam

Locate yourself to the steam install directory
Enter the directory 'config'
Open the file 'loginusers.vdf' in your favorite text editor

Change these two lines:-

		"WantsOfflineMode"		"0"
		"SkipOfflineModeWarning"		"0"

To these two lines:-

		"WantsOfflineMode"		"1"
		"SkipOfflineModeWarning"		"1"

Under your account.

I went and found those lines, but they are already in "1", both of them..

Have you tried simply disconnecting your computer from the Internet when you do it?

I found out that when you open Steam without having access to the internet it just opens in offline mode, so the problem was solved. Thanks anyways :)

I also found that you need to set loginusers.vdf to read-only (right-click -> properties), as Steam will reset "SkipOfflineModeWarning" to 0 when it closes.
