Another no sound in steam games ( Returns after exiting game)
On steam games (Dishonoured, Total war games) my sound cuts out a few minutes into play. It seems frozen because the sound will return when I exit the games.

I have a usb sound card because my on-board sound port is broken.

I have un-installed all the sound drivers and reinstalled with the latest Perhaps I need the latest bios updates? If so I cannot find them anywhere without paying for biosagentplus.

The usb audio device is set to the default audio device in the Windows Sound Devices window.

Any ideas?

Hard to trouble-shoot that one for sure. As if it is what I think it is, your game should just crash. Most sound cards (various types and brands) these days support 24bit Audio. Most games however do not support this format. So games can often lose sound in game, or the game crashes because of Windows being set to 24bit Audio Format.

Try changing the format to 16bit (either 44000hz or 48000hz) in Windows Playback/Recording Devices.

By right clicking your Playback Sound Device and go to Properties > Advanced > Default Format. If you use a Mic, change that format to 16bit as well.

I only have 16bit either 44000hz or 48000hz in Windows Playback/Recording Devices and neither made a difference.

The games can play for hours without sound.

When I alt-tab the game and click on the sound icon in the bottom-right hand corner It shows the sound green bar at a low level, but there is no sound playing.

Also, since u say your "Realtek Onboard Audio" is broken. You can disable that device in the Device Manager so it's one less driver for Windows to load and have running in background.

When u single left click the Speaker/Volume icon in Tasbbar, click the text "Mixer"
Make sure all the volumes are turned up (as needed). As it is possible to have different volumes for seperate programs such as

Master Volume, Windows System Sounds, Steam, Chrome, IE, Firefox, Media Player, etc.

You can also try going into Playback Device listing, then right click and Disable an Audio Device u do not use/need. Such as Speakers (Realtek HD Audio) or Realtek Digital Output (Realtek HD Audio)

They are all on full. (Should they be?)
The ones I have are: Speakers, Windows Sounds, Sound, Steam

and two with "Name Not available" but they disappear usually (I think they appear when i do a sound test in the playback options)

Open a game, and once it is loaded to main menu, ALT+TAB back to desktop and double check the Sound Mixer in Windows for volumes being lower than others.

For the most part, unless u wish to customize them, they should all be at Full / 100%

I disabled the sound devices I didnt need, but the sound still goes. I alt-tabbed as well and all the sound volumes where full (Including the game volume)

Try exiting out of everything (just main open programs/games) and try plugging the usb sound into a different usb port. Then try a game and see if it still occurs.

If still does the same, then I'm stumped.

TBO your system specs are not very good for the kinds of games you are trying to play.

> Vista OS
> CPU below 3.0Ghz range
> NVIDIA GT 240 (a low end GPU not meant for gaming)
> Below 4GB RAM

All of these make the system just not good for DirectX/OpenGL games. Especially demanding games made since 2009 or so.

Have you tried testing with another speaker/headphone to make sure if it's either your PCs foult or your headphones fault?
Therbonmax 4 września 2013 o 8:40
FIXED! Thank you very much!

My usb sound card was plugged into a usb hub which in turn was plugged into the back of my tower. I have now plugged the usb card directly into the back and the sound has not cut off at the usual points.

So one to remember for the future plug usb cards directly into the tower.

(JoeSmR - I tried with headphones plugged into the USB hub and it did the same thing)

Thanks again Bad-Motha . I had tried other ports on the usb hub but your post prompted me to try a direct connection.

Seems silly the hours i spent download drivers and doing updates. :/
