Try changing the format to 16bit (either 44000hz or 48000hz) in Windows Playback/Recording Devices.
By right clicking your Playback Sound Device and go to Properties > Advanced > Default Format. If you use a Mic, change that format to 16bit as well.
The games can play for hours without sound.
When I alt-tab the game and click on the sound icon in the bottom-right hand corner It shows the sound green bar at a low level, but there is no sound playing.
When u single left click the Speaker/Volume icon in Tasbbar, click the text "Mixer"
Make sure all the volumes are turned up (as needed). As it is possible to have different volumes for seperate programs such as
Master Volume, Windows System Sounds, Steam, Chrome, IE, Firefox, Media Player, etc.
You can also try going into Playback Device listing, then right click and Disable an Audio Device u do not use/need. Such as Speakers (Realtek HD Audio) or Realtek Digital Output (Realtek HD Audio)
The ones I have are: Speakers, Windows Sounds, Sound, Steam
and two with "Name Not available" but they disappear usually (I think they appear when i do a sound test in the playback options)
For the most part, unless u wish to customize them, they should all be at Full / 100%
If still does the same, then I'm stumped.
TBO your system specs are not very good for the kinds of games you are trying to play.
> Vista OS
> CPU below 3.0Ghz range
> NVIDIA GT 240 (a low end GPU not meant for gaming)
> Below 4GB RAM
All of these make the system just not good for DirectX/OpenGL games. Especially demanding games made since 2009 or so.
My usb sound card was plugged into a usb hub which in turn was plugged into the back of my tower. I have now plugged the usb card directly into the back and the sound has not cut off at the usual points.
So one to remember for the future plug usb cards directly into the tower.
(JoeSmR - I tried with headphones plugged into the USB hub and it did the same thing)
Seems silly the hours i spent download drivers and doing updates. :/
