Low fps on decent gaming laptop. NEED HELP!
I just reacently purchased a new Lenovo y500 laptop, so I thought I might try out Total War Shogun 2. I downloaded the demo and played it on high settings without and noticeable frame rate drops. I then went back on it today. When the menu came up it was really glitchy (for lack of a better term) and choppy so i checked the graphics settings and everything was exactly the same as were i left off the night before. I loaded up a battle and the fps droped to about 10-20 fps. I put it on low settings and it helped a bit but it was still noticeable and not nearly as smooth as it was the night before and that was on high! So my question is, whats going on? Game Debate.com says that I should be able to run it smoothly on high (ehich I did) but today its just not working properly. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I'm using a top of the line laptop (Alienware M14XR2), and though 99% of games play excellently, some still have rendering issues.
Firstly you said you're playing a demo, there will be bugs present there.
Secondly, check all your drivers are up to date (have a look at the NVidia GeForce Experiance program and sign on to Beta).
Thrirdly some games hate Windows 8, If you have the option to roll back to Windows 7 I reccomend it. (When I baught my laptop I was told 7 was the best for games).
Hope that helps :)
Thank you. I appriciate the reply. SInce posting this, the game has started to work fine again. I dont understand why though. I did update my graphics card on the nvidia websight. i dont know if thats what helped or not but it is working fine. I might download windows 7 like you recomended becuase I to have heard that it is quite a bit better than windows 8. Anyways thanks for the reply.
Jacksaylor11,

I just wanted to concur with what Empertet said. I have a pretty boss laptop as well and I get choppy crappy play on some games and others work perfectly. A solution I've found is "roll back to windows 7" You don't actually have to install windows seven though, you can run the program as windows seven and get the same effect. Here is how:

Right click the game you want to play > go to properties > compatibility tab > check the box that says compatibility mode > pick windows 7 from the drop down menu > apply.

Then you can run the game and probably have your issue solved. It worked for me. Also I'd like to post a problem I'm having in this thread as well if it's ok. I can't make a new thread because "i've posted too much recently" but it's been days since I posted anything :(.

Hello,

I have had the same steam account since the day steam was launched. It has been a while since I logged in (around 8 months probably) but now when I try to log in I get this message "steam is having trouble connecting to the steam servers" BUT I can log into my friends account just fine.

I thought maybe this problem was because I was typing my password in incorrectly but I can't even get a password recovery email from steam to my registered email account. I did however try to recover the pw on my friends account and that works fine.

So everything works perfect on friends account, nothing is working on mine (I get the error message).

Not that it matters since I can log into my friends account just fine, but I've tried all of the trouble shooting suggestions I could find:

Making sure I have a hard wire connection
Hooking my modem directly to my comp (bypassing my router)
Deleting the cleanregistry.blob file
Uninstalling and reinstalling
Creating permissions in my windows firewall for steam
Turning firewall completely off
Removed all AV and Anti spyware software from my PC
Opening all recommended ports in my router for steam

Any help would be appreciated.
Same here :(
Just a thought, and something that happened to me, did you perhaps unplug (or forget to turn on) your laptop from the mains supply?

what do you mean?
Jack: Glad I helped :)
As green said being plugged in is good for performance (and making sure the "high performance" battery option is checked), and I didn't know that you could do that, thank you Duck! :)

Duck: Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client?

Ya, I have :*(. It work perfect on my friends account but on my account I get that error. It just doesn't make any sense. I have a support ticket in but it's been a week with no response.
How odd... :/
I occasionally have sign-in issues but never that bad...
Have you checked your e-mail recently for the reset link, for some reason recently my e-mail can take a very long time to arrive (Yahoo/Gmail) sometimes it takes 2 days! (Wich is just rediculous). Or you could be facing a Steam-based problem?
Duck, you're Steam profile is pretty Effed up :/ There's no data on games and inventory etc.
Thanks duck, that seems like it should work except that when i go to properties, there is no combatibility tab.
Jack, try right-clicking the game shortcut and looking for "compatibility mode" that way, you need Admin rights to do so, so make sure you're in your admin account on the computer!:shockjockey:
It was my charger. It was not fully in the port so the fps was droping but thanks for all the help anyways! Thanks emertet and duck for the great advice though. I did turn on "high performance battery" and it seems to help. I am still trying to figure out the whole windows 7 thing but i will do it. Again thanks for all the help!
Hahaha! It always ends up being an unfeasably easy fix! XD
Also download the GeForce Experiance from the NVidia site, It optomises your laptops game settings (Individually) which can sort out most in-game graphics issues. I use it and get stellar performance on any compatible games :pandastunned:
Alright thanks for the tip, I will defineatly do that!
