Why can you change your profile name?

I like changing my profile name, I really do. I like how you get to make an account name, but go by a different name, but why? I mean, is there any particular reason why (what seems like) only steam does this?

Well normally it would be a good idea to use different names. My Steam login is not ((WOLVES))MRS.ALPHA WOLFE(MWWP) it is something completly different. People do it for someone won't know their login name making it easy to hack into an account
