It's basically so that you can pimp your profile and make your friends jelly isn't it? Also, I suppose the idea behind trading cards was to add another community aspect further differing Steam from other platforms. There's no real point to it, although I've heard there was a guy who bought up a bunch of low cost cards, creating a massive demand, driving up the price and made a whole lot of money off of them.
