Steam account - Query account by CD-key
I got this email from Steam support today. What does it mean?

"Dear Steam User,

This is an automated message generated by Steam account administration. It is being sent in response to a query made by a Steam user to discover all account names associated with this CD-key.

Steam account name: mutant_hero

You can use the above account name to log in to Steam. If you can't remember your password, click on the "Retrieve lost account" button on the Steam login screen.

Neither of those is necessary. The intended use of this feature is you ty to activate an old boxed game you have and it fails allowing you to find the linked email (as you own it and get the email) thus allowing you to realise you have another account and hopefully remember the login to it.

Actually, it IS necessary. I've been getting one of these every now and then, suggesting that one of the keys I have got leaked out. Now the most likely scenario is a giveaway site that was either hacked or simply handed out the same key multiple times, but it doesn't have to be. It could also be a store site getting hacked, for example. Or even my own systems.

Knowing WHICH key was queried would allow me to understand the situation, and whether I have to do something about it.

There is nothing you *can* do about it at this point. Someone else has a copy of a key that is linked to your account, they can't get the email and thus any information about what account it is linked to (you get all those emails), mostly all they can do is make these requests (which are at most annoying).

If you don't participate in free key giveaways or get keys from grey market resellers you'll never even see one of these emails (I've never seen one for example).

I didn't say they were nessasary, the email states "this cd key" implying that the key is in the statement. If it was referring to an un mentioned key it would say "a cd key" not "this cd key"

The this cd key is referring to the CD key used to make the query. Which is *supposed* to be your cd key that you literally just used a minute ago.

I haven't used a key for ages, this was not a response to me attempting to activate a key, it came completely out of the blue.

That is because someone else has access to a CD key used on your account (which they shouldn't). With the intended use of this everything makes sense. It is not intended for someone to know CD keys activated on your account except for you.

It is so unexpected for someone else to know these keys that CD keys activated on your account are a form of proof for account recovery.
