Steam doesn't launch and I can't play games w/o Internet!
Yesterday, the Internet at my area was down. It's actually a very normal thing in this part of the world...the Internets get wonky every once in a while.

So, I couldn't use a web browser to go online, and I decided to play some games that I have. Turns out, Steam wouldn't launch! It needs me to be online to play games.

I frankly never knew this to be the case. I only downloaded my first Steam game last week, and to me, it came as a shocker.

I did some reading online, and it turns out that indeed Steam requires you to connect to the Internet to play.

However, isn't anyone offended by such a ruling? I bought some games, they are on my PC, but I cannot play them w/o Internet. I'm glad I haven't invested all that much into Steam so far, and will look for alternatives (if any exist). Or just buy the games from the devs themselves or from Amazon DRM-free.

Is your account synced to Steam? If so you should be able to play offline.
You might need to change to offline mode. Click on the "Steam" Menu and choose "Go Offline". Games that you have downloaded should play now. Try going offline next time your internet is working and see which games work in offline mode. Multiplayer games where you play against other people will not work of course.
If this doesn't suit you there are alternative legal ways to buy DRM free games. Not all games will be available DRM free but some are :)

The issue is my Internet goes off w/o warning. How can I be prepared for that? And now, I am not interested in leaving Steam on offline mode as I want to use the chat features.
Just make sure it's synced with your account.
When you're logging in, check the box about remembering the password, or some kind of this thing. When internet goes off, it'll give you choice of running it in Offline mode.
The choice to run in offline mode is not a part of it. It just changes the steam icon in your tray with a red line (Offline mode) And ofcourse, the store and community page won't work upon startup.

And yes, you have to save account credentials. (password + username)
Easy to test..

1. Save account credentials
2. login
3. logout (exit)
4. disable LAN connection
5. start steam
6. profit
