What did I do wrong? (PC specs question)
Random computer question here. My old PC died and I went and bought a new cheap one, with supposedly better specs. Yet games are running really slow on the new PC, while they ran fine on the old one. I thought I did my research and bought an equivalent/slightly better budget PC, but I obviously did something wrong. I didn't really want another gaming rig in the house, I just wanted a working second computer so my girlfriend and I could continue playing Minecraft together. Can anyone help me shed some light on the matter?

Old PC: Intel E6500 dual core 2.93 Ghz, 4gb DDR2 ram, WinXP, GeForce 9600 GSO 512

New PC: Intel i3-3220 dual core 3.3 Ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram, Win 7 64bit, GeForce 9600 GSO 512 (same video card)

Nope, brand new hard drive and ram, only thing I've put in so far is the old video card. Thanks for the tip about the experience index and benchmark utilities, I'll try it out. Though I wish the old computer were still functional to compare.
Need some data:
Processes, CPU Useage(when idle), Physical Memory percentage, physical ram, pagefile size.
I think you'll see the problem if you check taskmanager.
If you want an analysis and a solution find someone of the nerdly persuasion. Avoid taking it to a shop, they usually don't know what they're talking about.

Also Vista/7 are notoriously slower and more bloated (They both got better after hundredts of updates though).

Oh, and try switching back to DVI since that gets better performance.

One thing to note, my old comp runs games pretty well. Details at the bottom of my profile summary. Certainly a newer machine should blow my doors off but pre-builts usually have tons of trialware to clog Windows even more.
(*I have 40 processes, 15% CPU, 65% RAM 2GB)

It's a custom-built PC though, with a fresh OEM Windows 7 installation and no 3rd party software. All I did was run updates and download the latest drivers. I'll check the data when I've got the time, thanks for the help.

Now I'm tempted to install a Windows XP partition to see if that's any faster.

On boot I had 55 processes, 0%CPU, 24% physical memory (4gb), pagefile size 4041mb

I run google drive and pandacloud antivirus, but I also had those on the old computer.
Tried installing a WinXP partition, result is pretty much the same on the Minecraft front. Computers make less and less sense to me.
Not sure but maybe this could help: As much as motherboards do not tend to have much in 'speeds' to compare (unless you go into the much deeper techie stuff and we're not talking about the speed of the individual components anymore but how efficiently they communicate in a certain combination or quality of the circuits and stuff like that), in practice I've seen a build before where the motherboard was the bottleneck in a situation similar to this. I've had a computers with most of the same components (just changed Motherboard and case) and noticed a fairly significant change in speed. One of the boards was a decent mid-high range board and the other was a cheap low end board. I just took the components from one to the other and noticed a good difference. Maybe your old motherboard was a better board?
Definitely to think so, sadly it was the old motherboard that died. I'll look up their model numbers and compare.
The components youve listed are exactly as you say to the same standard or better. So you have to discount them from the equation and go down the list of what else can be the problem (which looks to be the mother board as the previous poster suggested) Experience has taught me that your computers only as good as the worst component in the pc. Hope you get it figured out =)
old power supplies ruin good computers
Oh man, really?! I really need to do better research. Lesson learned, don't assume power supplies and motherboards don't affect performance!
my suggiestion is that your pc is to low sry..
I do have a gaming rig with much better specs, the above PC was just to replace a really old computer a friend built years ago for me.
...another lesson learned: remember to connect the power supply to the video card. Problem solved!

Man I'm an idiot. Thanks for all the suggestions, peeps.
