if I set it How visible is my "Real Name"?

in the various badges I am asked to to set my real name. If I provide this who can search for me and what can they see when using my real name? My profile visibility is set to Friends only.

What badges are you talking about. Nothing on steam requires a 'real name' eexcept if you hit the 200 limit on the Market.

So if you set that I wont see it but your friends will see it.

Pillar of community / Community Ambassador has it.

Set your real name on your Community profile

It sits on your profile page, under your location text.

You don't have to use your full name, or even your real name. If you want the badge point, set it to Gordon Freeman if you like, wait for the badge to detect you've set a name and then remove it.
