Invalid Depot Config
Apparent fixes (note these are from 3 years ago)

Publicado originalmente por martino_admin:
If you get this error, it's because your Steam client needs to update to the latest version.
Click Steam -> Check for Steam Client Updates and check under Help -> About Steam, the Steam package version should be 1373418487 or higher.

Briefly disable any Anti-Virus or Firewall programs that might interfere with the Steam client update process.

or just run steam://flushconfig

When I try to install Borderlands 2 through steam:

1. The amount of space on disk required does not show up.
2. The create desktop/start menu shortcut icons are bugged and the check boxes disappear/re-appear.
3. The file of the game id (49520) does not appear in the downloading folder of steamapps/account.
4. The download fails on creating local game cache files.
5. The error Invalid Depot Config appears and the download exit.

1. No firewall was on.
2. Anti-virus was disabled.
3. Ran steam in administrative mode.
4. Exited/restarted steam.
5. Restarted computer.

Bought during Steam summer sale.

Official reply from Valve :

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

- Steamapps and Userdata folders

- Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam:
