For a game you can right click it in your library and choose do not automaticly update. If you are talking about the client ... nope.

Tell that to the people who have been using the offline mode for longer than that.
And a Valve Employee negating that restriction

Anyway. If you want to disable automatic updating, Trying the following is worth a shot:
Open the Windows run dialog (Windows key + R) and type in steam://open/console to open the Steam console.

Then type in:

@AllowSkipGameUpdate 1

Hey presto, Steam will now let you skip updates when you launch a game.

Noet that the steam client doesnt update that often. Recently the new cleint introduced several invasive bugs that required immediate attention.

Generally speaking though the client iteslf onlyu updates like once every 1-3 months.

The latest update to the Steam client causes my PC to BSOD. Rolling back the client fixes this. What are proposed solutions, aside from calling Valve and demanding a refund for all the games they've now disabled?

If you want it fixed, I'd recommend posting this here:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/

With actual details, like what your BSOD says, and what your operating system is, et cetera.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/0/864957817327818370/

Although, as was said in the other thread, I really doubt the client update is directly the fault of your BSOD.

P.S. Necroing near-2 year old threads isn't really the way to go. Starting post will actually be 3 years this year.

Most likely it is your Computer that causes the problem. Try to keep your drivers and system up to date.
If you want to bother the Support with that, make a Support account and good luck.

The steam client updates EVERY time you launch steam. But fret not, because this works:

Any clue how end users are supposed to discover that this feature exists/ and will solve all their problems and not have to spend time googling for answers and getting confused by incorrect info? I'm for example not finding actual supporting documentation now, non portable?

Also confused, why the user cannot set the "only update a game when I launch it" globally? I'm missing where this setting should really be added for the whole library.
