moving steam directory
I recently had to move my steam directory to another 'partation', However when I put the steam apps folder back into the steam folder and try to play a game it starts to download the game again even though there are 120 gig of games in there , any idea what I am doing wrong am sure I have done this before and it worked.

IIRC you need to open the acf file for your game and change the install dir to the new location.

Were are these acf files located, and why does steam make no mention of this procedure?.

This is weird, If I go to say the darkness 2 and click its .exe, the game will load, but when I go to steam and try to play it it starts downloading from the net, as though it has no idea all the files are in the steam app folder. Maybe I need to uninstall steam properly reg keys and all is there a tutorial for that?.

The appmanifest_nnn.acf files are in the \steamapps\ folder. There is one for each game you have installed idenitified by its app number in the store. e.g. Left4Dead2 = appmanifest_550.acf

You can edit them in notepad

I've had to move Steam several times and never had to deal with any *.acf files. Did you verify the local files?

The old content system only looked for the files in one place so you didn't have to worry about the acf files. The new content system can have games installed in multiple locations and the acf files tell steam where the game is and store update status.

you will find the acf files in steam/steamapps/common/
