Someone found out my location on a game?!

How is this? I was playing Day of Defeat Source and somehow someone knew what city I was from! WTF can someone help me? I want to avoid this in the future! This is the first time this has happened to me!

Don't worry about it. Some people can make great guesses based on your connection (ping).

So if they know where the server is located, and compare it to your REALLY low ping for example, they would figure out you are really close to the server. Easy guess.

I've asked someone before if he was from Tokyo (just a rough guess, because he had over 300 ping), he actually confirmed my guess. Must be dumb luck.

Also, admins see IP adresses. A simple whois on IP traces it back to country/city.
It ain't easy to narrow it down to an adress, since your internet service provider is taking care of your privacy on that part. Nothing is 100% safe,

Calm your t!ts, an IP address only shows a person the general area where you live. It would take someone an extreme ammount of experience, time and sometimes even money to track you down to your home address and full name, unless you managed to piss someone far enough to drive them to that point like doing their sister, or stealing money then you shouldn't be worried about some kid on the internet who found out how to track someone's IP address.

You're from the USA
And likely from Salem

If you connect to certain servers tey keep stats of you onilne which makes it easy to search for specific information if htey store it.

Note I got that from google. no 'hax0rz' skills required.

Yes, your IP address states where you are located, not the exact address, but normally the town... calming t!ts is a good thing to do.

Most of the day of defeat servers and also other valve multiplayer games have plug ins that broadcast to every player where you are from based on your ip addres when you connect to the server.

yep its just a plugin from the server. see it all the time on TF2

1. Wireshark your IP
2. Key'd the IP into some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ website like whatismyipaddress.org
3. Copy pasted the info it told him
