"Failed to add new Steam library folder"
I have bought a new computer, with two drives: A SSD-drive (C:) and a regular drive (D:).
I have installed Steam om drive D:, and set drive D: to default for game installation. But some games, such as Civilization V and Team Fortress 2, I want to install om drive C:.
But when I want to set the installation for drive C:, I get the following message:
"Failed to add new Steam library folder".
Someone who can help?

I just ran into this issue again. My fix was a little different from what I've seen here and maybe it'll help someone that couldn't get the other way to fix it.

I went into the settings under View>Settings> and then in "Downloads" clicked on [STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS] and then added a new library folder under my C: drive that way and it worked fine

Another fix because the ones above all didn't work for me:
Add a folder to the C: drives main directory, like so: C:\SteamLibrary and move that folder to C\Program Files(x86)\ it will prompt for administration permissions.
Navigate to Steam Settings > "Downloads" and click on [STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS] add the moved folder: C:\Program Files(x86)\SteamLibrary\

Proper FIX: Failed to create Steam Library Folder. That means you have added too many folders to your steam already. Go to Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders and remove one of the paths listed there by right clicking on it. Add a new Library Folder, right click on it and make it default. A Yes should appear in front of it. Now it will install in that forbidden location. Enjoy!

@Weedman!

Your fix was the only , out of all of these that not only worked, but was simple and most of all, MADE SENSE.

Some of these "fixes" were almost painful to read.... as if people having an actual ONGOING issue they turn to the forums to help for, was just updating programs in the steam list.
Sorry, but christ almighty.

Thank you for your time taken to illuminate a legitimate and easy fix!

Kinda worried I messed my permissions up PRIOR to reading your post though..... any clue if there is a way to reset C: to default permissions (at least things like Windows folder, Program Files, App Data, etc?)

while this is an old discussion, i had this issue myself (steam installed in D drive) - still not realised how to force a steam library sub-folder into my program files folder, but.. i created a steam library sub-folder directly into the root (C:\SteamLibrary).. something weird going on with the folder settings being write protected - hope this might brighten someones day in the future though

Thanks Bonehead It Works In 2017 2+ Years Later THANKS!!!!

You could just make a folder and edit the permissions and change it so that all application packages are allowed to modify, and create a permissions profile for yourself on the folder and give yourself full control. That helped my problem I was currently having.

OMG!!! That was it exactly! I had tried all of the other suggestions and nothing worked. I removed an unused library on my C drive and then I could add the new one!! Thank you so much!

Yes. It tells you that when you attempt to do it with a non empty folder, you are correct.

Create a new folder under C:\Programs and files (x86) and call it Steam Library.
Right click on the new created folder and go to Properties.
Click on the Security tab
Click on the "Advanced"
Click on the blue word "Change"
Click on "Advanced..."
Click on "Find Now"
Below "Search Results" look for your account name (most people use their own name as the account name so it shouldn't be hard to find)
Select your account and click on "OK" and then "OK" again on the next dialog box
Check the box that reads "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"
Check the box that reads "Replace all child permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object"
Click apply and wait for the process to complete and exit this window
Go back to the security tab
Click on "Edit..."
Look for your account and select it.
Click on the check box aligned to "Full Control" then click apply the OK
Go to the General Tab
Next to Attributes the "Read-Only" should be unchecked. If it is not then you know what to do.
Click on Apply and wait for this to finish.
Click OK to exit the Steam Library folder properties.

IMPORTANT* If you access the Steam Library folder again the Read Only Check mark will be there, but don't worry this does not affect the main folder

Go back to Steam, select your game, install it and change the destination path to be the folder you created.

You Welcome.

@Dav0 - while that may work for some situations, for many it does not alleviate the issue. For some reason how steam stores its "library' list it can be difficult when, especially, the install is leftover from a windows upgrade / update / OS install on a new drive and using old HDD as main storage for steam games. Your suggestion does help most problems people run into , I just wanted to state that people still having issues should specify that they have done what you listed :)

It's frustrating when 75% of people posting with a problem probably haven't even read the posts

+1 sir. Not tryin to take away from your thunder :) Just wanted to urge anyone else coming here for help, to state what you have tried from the solutions above! It sucks, but if you got capped bandwidth every month DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE! lol

Just go into your desired drive and right click, click properties then under attributes there should be read-only drive ticked, click on the box and press apply and it should be fixed.
