You can only purchase one license per account. However, you can buy games as gifts to send to other people.

if I have two computers in my home, then I have acquired two different licenses to play the same game

one license per account, your account can be used on any 1 computer at any time

One would think that this would be very obvious but maybe not.

Yes, but if I need to play with my son on two computers at a time?
What should I do?

Your son should have its own account and then you buy the game you want to play with him again on that account.
You CANT play the same game on the same account with 2 different people, each user must have his own copy.

What if we need to switch the computers sometime? Is it possible to install the game in one place on each and play it according to the Steam user logged on?

Yes. You can install the steam client on as many different machines as you want and login with any account.

Yes, but technically, the install place (same path, to save space) could be shared between two users? Could the Steam client then handle the two different Steam profiles even though the computer login is the same and the game is installed once? Also, is Steam client able to provide access to the currently logged subscriber games and forbid the access to the games owned by the other user?

While users can *see* all the games installed on the pc, they only access and play the games registered to their account.

Edit: One thing to keep in mind is that multi-users on the same pc could accidentally overwrite each other's local "savegame" progress.

Of course! Remember to witch Windows accounts as well. Keep it one account per person.

I am a Linux user. I have two computers configured to one account each and I don't intend to complicate things by making different users for us. But I'll have one account per subscriber on Steam. Hope is enough.

Linux has had support for multiple users way longer than Windows and some claim its more robust. But if you're cool with the consequences, such as him being able to access your stuff or (depending on the game) your savegames being mixed up, that will work just fine.
