Aside from that, the only way left would be to try and add the icons back manually - if you right click on the shortcut, select properties, then in the Web Document tab select Change Icon at the bottom right, you should be able to browse to the Steam->steam->games folder (note that is not the steamapps->games folder) and be able to find the correct icon for the game to select in there.
I should probably do that, shouldn't I?
And seriously, consider leaving your PC to check the hard drive for errors overnight as well. You could have developed some bad sectors on the drive.
As Steam is the piece of software that for most people who play games uses the hard drive the most - rewriting to the hard drive with every game update - it is often where such problems start making themselves known first.
1) Go to your shortcut icon and click change icon
2) Search for the program of your game in your steam library (x:\Steam\steamapps\common\) and select it and click ok.
You'll have a nice looking icon again !
