The unicode emoticons show as squares in my Steam chat?

I think that means the font steam is using doesn't have support for those characters.

Are you running the steam client in windows?
I believe the font being used in the steam chat window is "Arial", do you have it installed and can it display unicode characters?

Yes, steam client in Windows 7. Tried pasting them into notepad and setting the font to Arial (which is installed), and they show correctly there.

The people I'm chatting to can see the emoticons just fine. :confused:

Same problem (WinXP SP3). The emoticons garnered from trading cards show just fine, but the initial ones are all white squares.

Tried toggling the Steam beta, reinstalling the Arial font, etc.

Nothing worked as yet...

Oh, I'd forgotten about this thread. I've figured out since then that it's a software problem with displaying unicode characters on my computer, but the really weird thing is that they sometimes display correctly, they sometimes all display as squares, and sometimes a few of them display and the rest don't. Have not yet figured out any pattern in this.

Princess Grace - Since your problem is presumably consistent (unlike mine), I'm sure there must be a way to fix it. I'm pretty sure the font Steam uses isn't Arial, but I'm not sure which one it is. Maybe look for bundles of unicode fonts?

NB: Arial is a family of fonts, and Arial on Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME XP, Vista, 7, 8 - is absolutely different font files
