Trouble with DX9 games in fullscreen

Hey guys,

Not sure if this belongs here, but it seemed like the most appropriate forum to post in. I've been having a weird issue when running games with DX9. First, the logistics:

I'm using Windows 8 64 bit.
I have a Geforce 650m GT.

Now, whenever I try to run a DX9 game in full screen, I either get a mad crash (the screen starts to flicker back and forth between the game and desktop) and I can't get control of my computer again. Most times I have to restart when this happens. Or ... I get a "cannot create D3D9 device" error (or something to that effect. Valve's suggestion of forcing games to dxlevel 80 or 90 doesn't work.

It's perfectly fine when I run these games in Windowed mode, and I can do a borderless window using a 3rd party tool, but it gets annoying after a while (my native res is 1080, so if my laptop can't run a game in that resolution, I have to decrese my desktop resolution before playing the game ... GRRRR).

Anyone else encounter this problem? Any suggestions? I don't think this is a drivers issue since I get the same crash when using the Intel gpu built into my laptop (yeah, it's one of THOSE crazy newfangled computers).

Same problem here. I have GeForce 740m. And i can't even run many games because in order to change their settings to windowed i need to go in the game, but it crashes or flickers, so i cant even launch them. And Mirrors Edge won't work in either Full screen or Windowed. I Have Integrated Intel HD 4000 as well and most games even wont recognize my Geforce 740m. Help would be appreciated. Thankyou.

When u have two GPUs, such as in your case (and it should be the same for the OP as well), u need to launch NVIDIA Control Panel and set the NVIDIA Dedicated GPU as the Global Default.

Well, I was able "fix" my problem by reinstalling Windows ... *sigh*

Something about the way OEMs do laptops. Not sure what they do or how they do it. But I swear, every gaming laptop I get or used, it seems fine at first, then gets all flaky with performance.

Download all latest drivers, backing those up, then redoing the OS seems to do the trick nicely. And then not only that, fresh installs of latest drivers. Where the OEM always has bunch of outdated crap on it. I mean u buy an OEM laptop today and the installed drivers are from like last year.

Anyways yea any laptop that u buy, if u know how to; fresh OS install, updates and drivers can help out alot and pave the way for a smoother ride.
