Steam - Fatal Error. "Steam needs to be online to update. Please check your network configuration.
I run windows 8 Pro 64-Bit and I found the Fix, the problem is windows 8. I geuss the update doesn't work on wondows 8. I downloaded the update on my windows 7 Laptop and then copied the steam directory folder from the laptop to my pc and then my problem was solved. For those of you that have the same problem, try this it worked for me.

I followed the advice of installing an older version of steam, and though nothing else worked for me, including disabling firewall and deleting folders, this one did. I´d suggest anyone still having issues to give it a try, just google steam ver 1.x (mine was 1.1) download and look for a download link that´s reliable.

3 people live here, we all 3 have steam accounts, works fine on 2 of them, won't work on the other. all Win7 x64. Two of the 3 computers have identical specs, but one of them is not having any problems.

When I run the installer, it installs fine. You run steam, it goes straight into an update. The progress of the update begins, then suddenly loses a bunch of the progress, then it loads some more, maybe even twice as far as the last time, then it goes down to almost 0. Does that for a while, then crashes with the fatal error.

I tried using the command line -login thinking maybe it needed to be logged in before running its update, no change. command line -tcp, no change. Turned off firewall, no change. Tried a bunch of other stuff, no change.

Then I downloaded an older version of the steam installer. Worked like a charm...... at first. Did an update about the same size as the one before, but the progress bar moved forward in a steady progression from 0 to the full file size. Ok fantastic. Run steam, goes into another update, this is a small update of only about 5mb. It finishes in an instant, the window goes away, and nothing happens, steam isn't open. Run steam again, it hastily downloads the 5mb update. Nothing.

Can I copy all the steam directories from my computer onto my roommate's computer, then run it on hers and login with her credentials?

This all started because she could log in to steam just fine, and she got a game as a gift, tried to download it and it wouldn't download - just sit there at 0%. I think after several days it had at some point actually downloaded 32mb (out of 6.5gb). Tried uninstalling and reinstalling steam, and then a new problem.

whether its steam or the games I get through steam, there's always something wrong that I have to figure out on my own. Total buzzkill.

Last time I had this issue, back in late 2013 I added -TCP switch to my Steam shortcut as well as setting shortcut to "Run As Admin" in the Compatibility tab and from there on it's been working great. Sometimes Steam has trouble with client updates when "Run As Admin" is not applied.

Adding the -tcp switch works like this, go to properties of your Steam shortcut:
Target: x:\Steam\Steam.exe -tcp (then apply)

Then launch Steam via the shortcut with this added string and it will connect via TCP instead of the UDP default.

If you have Steam setup for Auto Startup on Windows Launch/Login, remove this. As this is likely issue people have with regards to Steam referring to network problems, as it is likely that Steam tries to launch prior to your LAN/Internet being fully established.

Same problem... I tried about 20 versions how to fix it... all troubleshooting on official stem web and all from this page... and nothing...

Most people run into this issue because they have Steam setup to Run at Windows Startup. Well most machines will run into this because Steam is launching before your LAN connection is fully established, which is why I recommend you do not have Steam in your Startup. The less startup apps the better. Launch things as you need them.

Okay so I fixed it. Turns out my windows firewall was causing the problem, which is strange given that it was up before, yet wasn't causing any trouble then. For some reason it only began to interfere now (perhaps a recent windows update tampered with something?). Anyway, I turned it off and I could finish the update etc. Although this is by no means a universal fix, I feel I can safely say that this problem will always be related to some aspect of your internet connection (ie. the fixes that propose deleting files from the steam folder are missing the point. Also people blaming Steam are wrong). So these kind of issues will include things like wireless internet (notoriously unreliable), your ISP (are they blocking certain ports?), background applications (anti-virus, windows firewall), an actual virus (never rule this out), or, a windows update that has potentially tampered with your network/wireless card drivers - amongst other things.

Hope you other guys manage to sort things out.
