Creation Kit Issue Script Editor
I can load up the creation kit just fine and use all of the features except looking at code or papyrus. when i try to look at the code i get an error saying SKSE Couldn't read argument and then the code closes. Skyrim is up to date as well as the creation kit and SKSE. HELP!!

SKSE? The script extender is user created and you may need to get the latest version, as I think Skyrim patched yesterday but I don't think it's that that would be causing it.. opening scripts up in the editor generally works better using another program capable of reading the file. I use Notepad++ as it's pretty easy to get to grips with.

Try that, it should call it when you try to open a script from the editor. Remember too, changes you make to script files take effect outside of a patch or mod. So you'll need to find your copies of the files you edited in the right scripts folder (I think just in the base folder, DONT delete source folder contents) and remove those to stop unwanted changes taking effect in your game, if there are any :)
Alright i did try this but does notepad ++ tell me when there is an error? how do i get the creation kit to default notepad ++ as its code editor? and isnt it a pain in the ass to include scripts created by an outside program? the SKSE is up to its latest date but it automatically plugs into the creation kit adding extra commands and code to papyrus, i made sure all the file paths are correct and reinstalled SKSE justs incase.

Im only at beginners level with papyrus so im going to need error notification.

Thanks for the help.

I don't think you'd need to change anything within the creation kit, there should be a command to "open in external editor" which will open the file with a compatible program, ie Notepad++. Doing that should let you open and edit what the creation kit wouldn't normally let you into anyway.

It's not really creating the script in another program as such, as it's opened through the CK in the first place to edit a copy of one of the script bases that it has in its database. What you will need to check out though when you're done is that the code will compile in the creation kit, as I don't think it can be checked in the editor.. There should be a command or button somewhere to test or compile code for the script when you're done editing if I remember rightly. Notepad++ just acts as the editing tool to let you change the script code in the first place :)

Hmmm when i tried to use the open in external editor the exact same error message poped up.
-_-

Hmm :/ I'd have thought that might have helped somewhat.. If it's not that then it must be something to do with the script extender then, since it's referencing that in the error from what you said. I'm not sure what though, i've never taken anything from it apart in the editor yet..
Well thanks for all your help i appreciate it! can i add you to my friends list incase of any further questions in modding or other wise?

Yeah, go for it :)
I've got a weird problem with the script editor. Been coding for a little over 18 months in a language similar to C# but little else. Getting started in papyrus has been a little daunting, and only been attempting it for a few days so far. I'm trying to set up a teleport system where the player has to actually conjure a doorway to the another realm wherever they are, even in interior areas. The Pocket Crafting and Ring of Change mods are similar, so I wanted to deconstruct their code to be able to use a variation in my mod, but I can't view the code. In the pocket crafting mod, I couldn't open the mod in the creation kit which is another issue, so I gave up there. With the Ring of Change, however, I found the script associated with the teleportation, called EquipROC. The creation kit won't let me access the source. I right-click and I get the options for add script, remove and remove all scripts, edit properties, and check out. The other options are greyed out for some reason. A windows search in the Data folder found EquipROC.pex, but no EquipROC.psc file. Am I missing the .psc or does it not matter? If not, why can't the creation kit open the file to edit? I tried opening the .pex in Notepad++ (love it for coding!) and the structure is pretty broken with a whole lot of what appear to be tags and some unicode characters. It seems that it's reading the .pex file wrong. If I want to edit the .pex files directly (at least I could view them for deconstruction even if saving in .pex wouldn't work) how do I fix it?

load up the creation kit but dont load a mod up with it yet. under gameplay at the top click compile papyrus scripts, then select them all and hit ok, it will take a while.

not sure why this same issue occurred for me seeing as i unpacked them the first time opening CK and it had worked before. only thing i can think of is that i later installed fallout 3s geck after which all my mods took on the gecks icon. i see that your post is from quite a few years back but hope this might still help or at least help somebody else that came across this thread looking for a fix.
This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
