How to install skyrim from disc?
i just got skyrim form walmart, and for all the stupid crap for steam to do it wants to download the files rather than install from the disc. and no im not letting it in less valve wants to send me 300 usd to pay my phone bill.

im fine with having to use the CD key on line, but you accepted it now use the files on a disc and STOP TRYING TO WASTE MY DATA PLAN.

QUESTION : how do you make steam NOT do stupid things like download game files for a game that curently IN your disc drive?

When you insert the disk and run setup or install, does it just install the steam launcher or does it install the game? If it installs the game, you can then tell steam to install the game and use the same root directory that the game is already installed in. Steam will search the directory for any missing files and only patch the differeneces. You can also use this method to move files from one drive to another without having to download the whole game again.

However, there is a good likelyhood that the game disk does not include the actual game at all. It may only include the steam launcher. In which case, you will have to download the game from Steam in order to play it. I'm sure the system requirements on the box include something about an internet connection. They don't hold responsibility for any additional expense necessary to complete the system requirements as listed on the box.

For me it was automatic, it just started installing from disc.

You could try this: stop the download and uninstall local data. Then go to the disc and click on setup.exe. Steam should then say "installing from disc".

No there isn't. The whole point of the disc is that you can install the game from it.

I've bought games that came on disk. A CD costs maybe a penny for a mass producing publisher and has 700MB of possible space for data. You can fit the steam launcher on it and not a 25GB video game. The 7 or 8 DVD's that would be necessary to fit that much data would easily cost 25000% more to produce. The original poster did not mention how many disks were included in the box or what type they were, but it is not unreasonable to give only a steam launcher on a disk when the system requirements are clearly stated on the package as requiring an internet connection and a steam account.

I did mention it AFTER commenting that if the game IS included on the disk to go ahead and install from the disk and have steam identify the root directory and patch it there.

In no attempt am I trying to moderate your post, but only to defend my own post. It is specifically against the terms of this discussion board to moderate other users's posts Jade.

Are you trying to imply that I was moderating your post? Because I wasn't. There is no forum rule that says I'm not allowed to correct other people´s posts.

I have never heard of a game disc that doesn't actually come with the game but if you have that's fine. Skyrim however is not one of those games.

I had the same issue on initial set up. To solve I logged out of steam and restarted the setup from the disk menu. This asked me if I wanted to play, reinstall or remove the game. I chose reinstall and it began to install from disk. Hope this helps anyone who googled their way here like I did.

Thank you so much, Marishi10! This worked for me.

It's been that way since 2003 when Steam launched. It was not designed for low speed connections then ...and isn't now. Using discs is pointless, you're still going to have to download more content, regardless.
